Catching On Fire

The sunlight shines orange like it is caught in flames
And embers that glow. Maybe this is the end of
The world as we know it. Mother Nature’s claims
And hold on us is strong. She will push and shove
Us to fight against it because isn’t that what we do?
Fight and defend this world that is ours? We cannot
Let our earth be taken away. We are sitting on every pew
Praying to the gods and to never give up. We caught
The world in an apocalypse, but we cannot stay there.
We cannot let Mother Nature punish us for making
Mistakes and committing sin. We should always swear
And promise to protect our lush nature. We are waking
Up those who have slept their lives away in a deep
Slumber. We are protectors of every piece and bit
Of rich soil that our roots grow in. We try to keep
Our world away from all that tries to harm it.

*Inspired by the wildfires in Northern California. My thoughts are with all of those effected by the fire.

Once Shaken, Twice Grateful

(In Memory of April 4, 2017 Earthquake)

Today,  money lost it's value
Facing the threat of nature's wrath
We all are equal - with just one life
To hold on to, to guard and save, to cherish

Today, we all felt Your Power
Accepting that we are all at Your mercy
God Allmighty, we all pray and beg for our safety
Asking forgiveness, asking redemption.

Today, we realized how precious life is
Pride nor shame, goodness and ill intentions
Faded like dust in gushes of unseen air
What is left is Him and His grace.

"Last Night Santa Rosa Caught Fire..."

Words as I woke to a phone text that glowed
Toxic air that filled a colorless sky

Over house & neighborhood still standing.
The winds had sideswiped toward another part

As later death is still being counted
While he is grateful despite the sparse time

He had to gather anything at all
And run to speak of this another day

With smoldering homes like black & white film.
I forgot to ask if he had a dog.

Image credited to "wheel & cross", with my thanks.

This piece is entered in the DUP competition "Natural Disaster".

Neat orderly blocks of houses
followed all the rules
of white middle class
in the city no less
not  in the hills

They askin for it
livin in the hills

in the city,
we got  firemen
we got nine one one

in them seventy mile an hour winds
we got a little visitor
a little ember riding on the winds

gently tickling
licking a little fkame
into a house on the edge
in the middle of a long nite
a little ember into a fire

911 cant come they are swamped

Where is the neighborhood water tower
aint got none This aint the wild west

we dont need to
KNOW our neighbors here
we dont even need to
KNOCK on our neighbors door here
we got ALERTs
ifn sumpthin wrong...

Well, the alerts dint come,
you see  they was worried
the streets mite get too busy
makin it hard for first
responders to get around

we chose to leave ourselves
in the dark
we had to prioritize who
got the fire trucks

you?   well uh, well

your neighborhood burned down
you had to jump in the swimming pool
beat off the flames for an hour

oh, sorry about your cats

99 Miles in a Suicide Wind

Night’s umber sky will see no sun
The sanded brown of grave stone farms
In ochre hues trace ridgeline paths
Ninety-nine miles in a suicide wind.

In screams of crows that call the dead
And sirens’ songs that break the soul
Escape with only true love’s run
Ninety-nine miles in a suicide wind

With devil’s eyes and demon's calm
That steals the past with dripping claws
And stains the mind no tears can cleanse
Ninety-nine miles in a suicide wind.

In air that smells of battle camps
And fumes that choke a thousand lives
In sheets of snow like virgin ash
Ninety-nine miles in a suicide wind

To wake before its nightmare edge
With taste of death in morning fog
In languid voice the prayers will rise.
Ninety-nine miles in a suicide wind.

The gambles' scores are settled now
As ghosts begin to seek their rest
The mounds of dust are set adrift
Ninety-nine miles in a suicide wind.

(My photo: Cleveland Ave., 10/26/17, Santa Rosa, California - that caught on fire one Sunday night in October).

An Alternate Eclipse

Scarlet scares in paper - tissue
Film
Tears
Smoke salts our...
Our dying air
Merlot miasmas
Mortal
Fervid
Gloomy lacunas loom
Cloaked in fumes
Gorging fires
Forests reform to cinder pyres
Hellish heat hunts higher...
