Poetry Contest

Be inspired by the beach in winter
The beach isn't just for hot summer days, so I took a ride today and got some photos of it in the snow.  (Location:  Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester MA, for those wondering)

Use the photos below as inspiration to write whatever or however, they make you feel.  One week, no collabs, as many poems as you want, any style/length.

Go!

The beckoning waves, on their pitch I'm sold
Frothy and mountainous, thunderous and cold
This pipe is all mine, the frigid favors the bold
You stayed in the water all day the bunnies scold
Dont worry hunnies let's get this blanket unrolled

A d r i f t

The views are frosted over with the frail,
A winter's chill holds captive the sea grass
While shoreline snowdrifts pale,
And whitecaps cast their lines,
The world in hibernation as they pass.

And I, a misplaced journeyman afoot
Adrift so far away my west coast home,
Have come to touch the time
My kith and kin had roamed,
From Scotland, Wales & Nova Scotia's clime.

Yet even though I walk a windswept prow,
I tend to cast my gaze back out to sea
With fervent set of brow
As if to find at last
A ship aground who's cargo waits for me.

Where I Am Home

A smell of sea salt animates
Childhood memories, my mind translates
My soul’s abode, patiently awaits
A sense of comfort the air creates

Rhythm of waves, crashing onshore
Sand beneath feet, my toes explore
Chill of seawater, emotion’s vigour
Mist of the ocean, my thoughts restore

The sun kisses the horizon
Wishing to forestall

Polar Plunge

Severe
Bitter
Frozen
Shocking

Severe bitter shocking memories
Tattooed with large frozen goosebumps

Polar Plunge, is about vivid winter beach memory that I participated in.  A Polar Plunge is a Minnesota rite of passage.  In order to convey the shock of his experience I chose to write his work in a Tyburn style poem.  I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Seaside Blues

The beach
I used to love
Warm white sand
Between my toes
Like soft sugar
I’d lie
And watch the world
Go by
As I turned
Brown and crisp
Intermittent trips
Into the sea
To cool off
And be cool
Strutting back
To my hammock
Clutching a cocktail
This is living alright
I was never happier
Than I was
On the beach
A bronzed Adonis
Well in my mind
At least

The beach
I now hate
Hate with a fiery passion
Soft white sand
That a wheelchair
Won’t get through
I wheel along the pier
Trying to avoid
Eye contact
With the beach
And those
On it
I’d lie
If I said I don’t
Miss it
I watch the world
Go by
With my back to
The beach
I couldn’t get into
A hammock
I am not allowed
Alcoholic cocktails
I no longer see
The bronzed Adonis
Just half a man
With a seaside
Longing

Thanks for all the entries, everyone!  I'm going to have a decent read of them all on Friday--been a crazy week with very little time other than work.  :)

It is hard
to watch a friend
walking the path
of a fragmented mind
while sitting here
on this beach
of sorrow
gazing out
onto a sea
of my tears
watching someone
who has become
more than a friend
walk the path
alone

Where the Mandrake Lies

A tree borders
the beach
Between both shore
and earth;
A rendezvous
of change
Entwined by
sandy root

Beyond the realm
of salt
Before a kingdom
of dirt
Those with eyes
to see
Learn the secret
of One

Branches bordering
the beach
Between dormancy
and Life
Harbor sacred knowledge
of entwined
Togetherness
~
