Days of Membership
Hello DU Family Members,

This is my first competition in a while, so, I hope you all find this original and interesting.
The directions are a bit confusing, so be patient with me and read carefully:

Steps:

1. Go to your profile
2. Check how many days you have been a member of DU for
3. Take that day amount and add each individual number together
4. Keep adding until you've reached a: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9

For example, if you have been a member for 921 days
Take 9+2+1 = 11+1 = 12 = 1+2 = 3

5. Keep your final numerical result in mind
6. Below is a list of all DU Poetry categories. I have paired each category with (in my opinion) its opposite category. Although each pair might not be "opposites," I believe one would never write a poem pairing each category with its partner.

(Since this is a poetry contest, I have ruled out Fictional and Non-Fictional Prose)

Miscellaneous & Love
(1 & 10)
Drugs & Spiritual
(2 & 11)
Upbeat & Dark
(3 & 7)
Observational & Story
(5 & 8 )
Erotic & Anger
(6 & 9)
Self & Song
(4 & 12)

7. Now, if your final result is 1, you will write a poem mixing Miscellaneous and Love together. If it is 9 then a poem mixing erotic and anger will be written...so on and so forth. Obviously your final result cannot be a double-digit because you would have to add the two digits and it would equal the single digit. So, the only way to a Miscellaneous & Love, Drugs & Spiritual, or Self & Song poem one would have to get a final result of 1, 2, or 4.

Competition Guidelines:
1. No Collabs.
2. Proper Spelling & Grammar
3. Try to adhere to your two categories as much as possible
4. Any poetic style/length
5. Extreme Content is allowed if you so desire to go that route
6. Have fun!
7. Be creative!
8. Indicate your two categories please

If you have any questions feel free to post the questions on this thread or PM me. I hope you all find this interesting, if need be, I will extend the competition time.

I am sorry if my directions were confusing, don't feel sorry. Okay, you have a three. So on my list above you will see this:

Upbeat & Dark
(3 & 7)

You result is 3 so 3 is Upbeat and Upbeat is oppositely matched with Dark. So, write an Upbeat Dark poem!

I'm having a brain fart... I've been a member for 337 days , so do I add all of them together or just both 3's to give me a 6? I was never good at word problems in math! Lol. No matter what I add together, my answer will probably be "purple, because aliens don't wear hats."

(just tell me my number and end my misery!)

Okay ML: 337 --> 3+3+7 = 6+7 = 13 = 1+3 = 4

4 goes with Self & Song

So write lyrics (or as close to lyrics as possible, don't worry, I know lyrics can be hard) that have to do with yourself. If you're uncomfortable with that, try and make it really mysterious, not so blatant like "I" etc.

Just to make sure I didn't mess this up because I suck at math. I have been a member for 788 days. So I did all the adding. . .

7+8=15 15+8=23 and 2+3=5

So my number is 5, so my catergory is Observational & Story? I just want to make sure, that way if I decide to enter I know what I'll be working on.

Please and thank you.

Good comp idea!

I'd like to point out that the "member for days" number changes daily, so perhaps declaring here first with one's number would be a good idea?..

Grace, for 880 => 8+8+0 = 16 => 1+6 = 7, so

Upbeat & Dark
(3 & 7)

I may come back for this... My days are now at 538, so 7...

YES! You're correct. I know I should not make writers do math, I suck it as well. But, I wanted to think of a unique way to approach poetry comps...thanks for participating!

I am stupid too, don't worry!
Okay, so 880 days...

8+8+0= 16+0= 16= 1+6=7
Your number is 7
So you have Upbeat & Dark categories, write a Dark Upbeat poem!

Thank you Atakti! You're right they do change daily. But I just figured members would use the number of membership days when they first calculated the number for the two categories.

Grace, I think I, Atakti, and Sanku all calculated your number for you...oops!
