A dramatic year
Near death experience...
A friend and I nearly got killed when the car we were in stalled in the fast lane of the M8. She couldn't pull into any of the slow lanes, so we coasted to a halt and sat there, trying to call emergency services to get us to safety. About six minutes later, we were hit from behind at around 70mph.
Unemployment...
The clinic I had been working in as a massage therapist became a victim of the recession and closed down. My working week had consisted of a minimum of 60 hours and suddenly dropped to nothing.
Homelessness...
I get evicted from my flat, lose a lot of property that I've spent years accumulating as a result and suddenly have a lot fewer possessions. This means less drag. Theoretically, this means I can go anywhere in the world with nothing to hold me back. In reality, I return to Edinburgh.
Photoshop...
Someone gave me a copy of Photoshop and I started tinkering with it. It was daunting at first, but I kept persevering. Eventually I discovered I might even have a bit of an artistic talent.
Self-discovery...
I was diagnosed as being mildly autistic. A startling discovery to make after 38 years of just dealing with it. Suddenly a lot of things start to make sense and I begin to understand that there's a reason that I'm "a little thick" in some areas and have trouble understanding some things that other people take for granted. I also start to understand why it is that I notice things other people miss, but miss things that absolutely EVERYBODY else notices.
New job and potential new career direction...
I start work as a life model for an organisation that sets up art classes for girls on their hen nights. The term CFNM is perhaps appropriate here. After a while, my organisation skills are noted and I am offered the opportunity to take over the running of the Scottish side of these classes. My wages take a substantial hike and I start seeing opportunities to get creative with the concept.
2009... a dramatic year and potentially one with far-reaching consequences. There are opportunities in the darkest times.
