Winter Poems
#winter
Winter poems about the coldest season of the year, December to February in the northern hemisphere and June to August in the southern hemisphere. Winter brings short dark days and stillness, as nature sleeps. Here you'll find poems about the beauty of the winter months, and also poems about dealing with cold and challenging weather.
The Grass Grows White
You can see your breath in the air
The morning is cold
It is only 50 degrees
An interesting temperature
Nothing has frozen yet
But it might as well all have;
I extend my eye and hand to the sky and land
They have fallen asleep
Even the sun
It hangs in the air
Dozing
The light is bright but it has no intent
Like a lamp left on by accident.
I have to put my hands in my pockets now, and I wish I brought a hat;
I use the hot water when doing the dishes now,
We had French onion soup yesterday for dinner, ...

Autumn's Demise
Is it all just a coincidence
That autumn's leaves are the color of the sun?
Don't you find it strange?
Or am I the only one?
All those reds, oranges, and yellows
That brighten up the day
Eventually become a dingy brown
And quietly fade away
And all that you see
Will finally be erased
By a sheet of snowfall
Like whiteout on a page

Jasmine
jasmine flowers in the spring
then flowers again as we begin
autumn's shrinking daytime's glow
threatening a winter's snow
first on mountains way up high
then creeping down from looming sky
to this place down by the sea
where heather blooms constantly
through the darkness and the light
often grey clouds , still a sight
of flowers blooming in the rain
falling from the sky again
BC westcoast palm trees sway
when winter's winds come here to play
a teasing brush of frosty nights
snowdrops dress in...

In towering oceans of the autumn skies
The hues of twilight in your eyes—
Below these stars that kiss the trees,
Where will you sleep—among the leaves?
I am not yet known to be born,
Save that I have grown old…
And my heart was alive when I saw you
Dream upon a pearl—so like the dew:
Little tears that shine in a sun of glass
In the memory of frost upon the grass.
I cannot see, I cannot dream
Only in the hues of the snow…
There was mist among the stars,
And the ghosts all were ours,
On...

damn it, it’s freezing, he said
a morning as cold as unlived in linen, for god’s sake stay in bed

Laced
The breeze in the trees
is still subtle
yet is laced
with all I have faced
This wintery chill
hidden yet so forbidden
on this autumn day
has to have its say
Mixed with a waning sun
as if to warn everyone
about the end of days
on the worn, torn calendar
While time does run out
as we collect up our doubt
stuff it in our pockets
to bring along with us
Still full of fret and fuss
about all our “to-dos”
ignoring these bright hues
with all of their foreboding
is still subtle
yet is laced
with all I have faced
This wintery chill
hidden yet so forbidden
on this autumn day

Mixed with a waning sun

On the Eve of Autumn
On the Eve of Autumn
I've been riding the Sun for so long now.
Hearing Cicadas sing their summer song.
I wonder,
How much longer
Till they are gone?
Autumn lulls them to sleep
And winter brings silence.
For the cycle of life
So uncompromising,
Is bound by its laws
And demands full compliance.
Tonight the moon rises
On the eve of autumn
And colors will soon shift
To the beauty of aurum.
As summer retires
Enjoy fading light.
Enjoy fading warmth,
For in creeps the night. ...

Cool
Today
I entered a frozen portal
To a winter wonderland
And immediately
Felt the cold iciness
As my hands seemed to burn
I wore no gloves
Nor a warm coat
But did have a hat on
As i ventured further
Into the cold
I could see an imprint
Of a frozen unicorn
And also
As though caught mid-flight
Some frozen salmon
My only tool
Was a small ice-pick
Which i used, diligently digging my way
Through the thick pack-ice
I was aware
That i was close to getting frostbite
But carried on regardless ...

September Is...
This month after August
wedged in so tight
in between the sunlight
of summer and fall
Making me recall
this time each year
all I do fear
all I do still cherish
Heading back to school
as the weather did cool
pulling out the sweaters
finding the wool socks
Listening to the clocks
a little closer
as they do chime
imploring more rhyme
Measure the waning days
in more careful ways
knowing deep inside
winter will no longer hide
wedged in so tight
in between the sunlight
of summer and fall
Making me recall
this time each year
all I do fear
all I do still cherish

Septembre
French for "September"
This month likes to rule
while the weather turns cool
the leaves again begin
to don their fall plumage
While the sun starts to fade
soft light within the glade
sends a message
shows the sign
Making me resign
to this perennial truth
known since my youth
that winter is inevitable
This season of the soul
will always exact its toll
seek its due
in exchange for wisdom
For in order to learn
we must be willing to burn ...

Frost
So do tell me now
what is the cost
of an early frost
what does it yield
In both forest and field
that icy frosting
that silver sheen
ever so clean
Reflecting in the sun
warning everyone
about the approach
of a deep dark winter
How the wood will splinter
once split
once stacked
up high by the cord
Unable to be ignored
this dire sign
like a clear sacred wine
poured out upon the ground
what is the cost
of an early frost
what does it yield
In both forest and field
that icy frosting
that silver sheen
ever so clean
Reflecting in the sun

Season of the soul
how winter does now splinter
these frayed worn pieces
