Travel Poems

Travel poems, poetry about travelling and exploring the world. Poems about our human desire for adventure and exploration. Through travel, we explore and learn about the world, and ourselves. Poetry about encountering different cultures, taking on new challenges, and meeting people with very different lives to our own.
Letters from my Aunt #8
Back in nineteen hundred and sixty-nine
on the deep water jetty of al Muharaq,
three kliks from Manama on Bahrain isle,
a gray nuclear powered warship of the USA steamed back
from Vietnam where its huge shells attacked
positions of the commie Viet-Cong,
and me, a bit scared, in my telegraphists shack
hoped that those on R&R would soon be gone...
It was, briefly, a kinda anxious time
as I keyed in my reports in that little shack,
on the long finger of that jetty's quarter mile
back to land, then to Manama town down...

Great and Rugged Pyrenees
Great and Rugged Pyrenees
Whose solid presence demands
Notice of lush valleys
And Spanish oaks that dot the glens -
Prevailing winds churn in wrath -
I stop to breathe in them;
You cut the horizon in half
And grip my eye with icy hands.
Your cohort - a mix of clouds -
Can't forever hide your majesty.
Seville looks on from the south;
Andorra sings the victory.

Prevailing winds churn in wrath -
I stop to breathe in them;

The Sahara is another vast sea
The Sahara is another vast sea
Of zero-edge horizons
And remote hours of austerity
For "sailors" upon caravans
And the Sun beams mercilessly
And seems cruel to patrons
Until the Wind scoffs haggardly
And reshapes its art of dunes.

Galloping In The Wind
Dance unto my heart with such sweet tender words
Take my mind, my body, covet the wandering spirit of my soul,
The galloping of your hooves in the distance of time I strongly prefer
Over the rainbow and through the woods, always heard
Soar my Chi higher than the calling of the Sunrise's tweeting birds
Entwined lovers as hearts float through Heaven’s pearly gates
Let thy will of us blend, ordained by destiny’s fate
No gravity of time ever eradicates the balance of love’s equate
Destiny of wicks, when, infused, the Moth...

For My Love Of Water
When I think of water and its many gifts of surprise
Such a marvelous given blessing in disguise
Spiritual showers from the majestic skies
Hydration to quench, it’s the bodies’ ultimate high
Liquid, steam, or gasses
A treasured commodity enjoyed by all masses
Pure in its element
Irrigation for field crop developments
When I think of water I think of unfiltered knowledge to gain
Umbrellas to combat, during life’s stinging rains
A thirst to know where my seeds were once sown
Crowns of glory...

Caribbean Air
The air I breathe
You think it's free
A prison surrounded
By seas of Sweet Breeze
That can be Seen
Blowing Tru trees
Ah yes your at ease
Oh please
Open yuh eye's and see
The beautiful seas
Mas and parties
The beautiful women and sexy men
Are only clouds of our impending end
Every weekend we band together
As merry men, we party together
Till the sun comes up and
The bandits wait till the sun goes down
So what you feel is a vacation spot
To me is a very hot spot
So what you want me to lie

Rocking Chair
Waking up early this morning
Is it a quarter after two?
The diesel engine ran all night
and now I wake up to THIS view
I throw open my sleeper drapes
in a place I had to back in
It's in the middle of the night
I'd better go check my kingpin
With a flashlight and tire thumper
I check my pigtail connection
While most people are home in bed
I'll do a quick pre-trip inspection
We'll check out brake pads and leaf springs
and try the old Lincoln's head trick
Make sure the bumper sits level
and not above a large oil...

Going Nowhere
I may buy a ticket for a plane,
any one riddled with rust,
amended by tape and flown
by pilots who are most likely late
to the job
Home late from anonymous dates,
no food ate, buzzed and overweight,
depressed, in no shape to fly,
but then neither am I,
start em up
any one riddled with rust,
amended by tape and flown
by pilots who are most likely late
to the job
Home late from anonymous dates,
no food ate, buzzed and overweight,
depressed, in no shape to fly,

Pirate Religion
Captain Halliday strode across the chamber to where his dogsbody, Perkins, was crouched over a desk with an eyeglass screwed in and his raggedy tonsure framing a bent head so that he looked like a miserly London clerk. ‘Well, what do we have thus far?’ said Halliday. Perkins read him the letter. It detailed the journey at that point in time, how well the Captain thought that the leaving ceremonies had gone (not well; he was a man of intense and stringent habits, almost religiously ascetic, and disliked any bent towards emotion, scolding the cabin boys for their womanly tears and trepidations)...

The Fourth Watch
My watch is a proximate
Peg-legged rhyme
A mariner's rimed hazard
Off course
Intrepid, salty, faulty
Breached, shored up, still sure
Out of league
A foundling foundering
In ebbing cobalt elysian seas
Fathomless time unmoored

Affinity
Travelers are always scanning for
Familiarity
Even if it is only a hint
The crows eyes that remind you of
Your father
The simple hand gesture
That brings back the dead
The smell of Coney Island Diner
The gentle footsteps
Of a friend
I constantly scan for
Resemblance
I tell my heart to hold on
There is no distinction
Between knowing
There is no forgotten
Within love
