Like I Do
I wonder if German sympathizers
ones who risked their lives
to hide Jews
felt like I do now
watching history
circle back 'round
Did compassionate colonials
feel the same
toward Native Americans
my sacred ancestors
Or benevolent individuals
for the LGBTQ+ community
with a mind wise enough
to know we don't choose
who we Love
because Love is Love
and leads only the worthy
feel like I do
Those who are different
in race, heritage
and religious...

American Churches
A pastor Jim Schulz resides there.
The one we pass along the road
whose lettered sign deplores
excuse for sin, and extols grace.
My bland and musty Anglia faith
askance observes this Pentecostal wrath,
the churches like warehouses of the soul,
the Wal-Mart for your Christ-shaped whole.
We see five churches on one block,
some pillared and tall, and some very small,
and one a single office stuck between
a van rental and nail bar, it seems.
Religion’s as common as commerce out here,
competing with...

Love of a Preacher Man
Written from a journal entry about Shawn.
Here I am at 27, a single mother, an addict unable to care for my child. I've been labeled a whore by many. But still, he cares for me. I stumbled upon an unexpected beacon of hope in the form of a man whose heart is as big as downtown Dallas.
He is a preacher, his voice ringing through the halls of his storefront church, offering salvation to those like me, cast aside by society. With boundless kindness, he spends his days serving the homeless, preparing meals with the same love a mother might put into a family dinner.

Hail Insane Virgin
The virgin on stage, perfection and criteria,
attentive look, judge with mystery, blurred.
Extremely minimal details reveal sincerity,
but always with a dry, hard touch of evil.
Imperfections and false pretenses, makeup,
the black invades, the white keeps skin grey
so the virgin can go on searching for pleasure
for its own parts, obscure and needy, humidities.
They pray, oh, they prey... catch and fly away,
Harpy wings, no feathers, only plain old sins.
They slay, slowly, so meticulously draining
one victim after...

Witnesses of a No-God
Depressevangelicals,
a curious subculture
that has emerged
over the last few decades,
represent an intriguing phenomenon
in the religious and social scene.
With depressive tendencies,
these individuals find
in the evangelical hosts a refuge
for their anxieties and frustrations,
at the same time that they seek
to impose their opinions and concepts,
often devoid of logic and coherence.
Literarily, they can be compared
to tragic characters,
whose lives are marked by an incessant
search for...
