In His Heart
his walks in the park
is a quiet slow pace
listening to a singing lark
in another time and place
he loves her still
in his quiet way
she doesn't listen anymore
her fire for him gone
she asked to be free once
and he had hurt so bad
sadly he let her go
but she never left
she stayed but left their room
she became distant a stranger
he didn't mind anymore
she was just someone in another room
he loves her for their children
who had grown and went away
in the world...

Miss Prissy
He was dressed in his finest suit as he lay in his casket under the rotunda. Pat’s Aunt Mercy lay in her bed in a room off the big room. Her name was Pat and her duty was to sneak bourbon and whiskey to get Auntie drunk enough not to cry. She kept Pat on her feet as she went to the kitchen to get Auntie booze. Aunt Mercy ushered in her widowhood with gin and tonic with lime on the rocks. At twenty-one Pat was still girlish but old enough to learn how to mix drinks during a wake. Her bridegroom, Bob, was huddled with the men but quiet as a church mouse while letting...

Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
“Hello Pops. Sorry to intrude on my wonderfully studious young man in the middle of deep tort contemplations, but I have a little problem. Our house has flooded. So here I am with no adult assistance with our three-year-old son and the water, water is everywhere to borrow a phrase from Coleridge’s ‘Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.’ Could you get in that wonderful jalopy your Mom bought for us and take us to dry ground?”
“The car is flooded as well I am afraid. I am at the chapel on campus. Wait just a short while and I am sure the car will revive...

Sugar Festival Night
Sugar Festival Night
“Bob, why do you sit there reading news magazines all afternoon? Wouldn’t chatting with your beautiful wife be more interesting? You did marry me after all. And we are in Turkey. We speak the language. Let’s go out and mingle with the crowd.”
“Pat, I know being home while I am working at the base must get lonely. But I will make it up to you. Tonight we are going to the Sugar Festival.”
“I’ve heard about it from the general’s wife while gardening and being patient for your return as a proper wife should.”
“There will be dancers,...

Crossing The Threshhold
Feeling a little harried
Coz you're getting married
Who's to be carried
Across the threshhold
A bit of a ballyhoo
When you both say "i do"
So nervous you could poo
Across the threshhold
When walking down the aisle
It will seem like a mile
As you try to do it in style
Across the threshhold
Or a registry office is no better
The groom is going to get her
When he produces a french letter
Across the threshhold
But it could be a curse
If the french letter burst
Not sure who...

A Beautiful Day
On March 18th 2024
During the prelude to Spring
Shaniqa Rose (aka Daisy), and Luke
The prince, and princess, are marrying
The birds will be singing
The sun shall shine on you both
As you declare your love for one another
As you make that special oath
Wishing lots of love, and happiness
From all at Art In The Park
On this your wonderful wedding day
Such a fabulous beautiful lark!!!!!

Gifts
I hear it in your stories
and in rare moments, I've witnessed it:
your gift --
and I marvel at the empathy
with which you guide families
through their worst moments
Never impatient, judgement at bay
Always respectful, giving space
as they cope
and grieve
and make decisions,
wrapped in the stability of your care,
feeling heard and supported.
I wish you could bring the gift home,
but I know it's finite,
and I know it takes its toll.
In weak moments, I'm envious
that they aren't expected...

Sweethearts Day
She was getting ready for their date
when she heard him pull into the drive.
It seemed like such a long time
but he was always home by five.
When she greeted him at the front door
he was grinning from ear to ear
holding a box of Lucky Charms
and a bottle of Henry Weinhard's Root Beer.
She said, "Just a minute,
I have something for you, too."
She presented him with a six-pack of Busch,
and a jar of salted cashews.
They laughed at their gifts
giving each other a sweet kiss
sat down on the couch and...

To Cartageña, With Eternal Love
To Cartageña, With Eternal Love
“Marlon, I sewed your pocket.
Why not fill it up with tips?”
“My ancestors fought
In the war of liberation from Spain.”
“What in the world does that have to do with you in the present?
At least you could tell the Americans
That we don’t have welfare in Columbia
And that tips are appreciated.”
“Our pantry is always well stocked.
There is no need to abase myself for pennies.”
“You are the best tour guide in this city.
You deserve a gratuity.”
“Most of them do anyway.
No need to...

Ashley Darque
I was respectful
Or at least so I thought
Maybe I caught him in a midlife crisis
Maybe he should not have
Referred to me as Isis
In his dreams
Silly him
Is it my fault that his wife
Was ear hustling while he slept?
Listened closely as he snitched on himself
While he crept along my back alley
Sighhhh..
I'm not much into victimhood politics
People make choices
Choices have consequences
He just needed put an 'H' on his back
And...

First Cooking Lesson
The day before my wedding forty years ago
my mother taught me how to cook one meal
fried chicken
mash potatoes
homemade bread
and fudge
all cooked on an old woodstove.
After I got married
I decided electric was the way to go.
