Lines on an old Photograph
Amongst these streets grand lives were lived
in old Hunslet and the Carr,
we'er foreign words like the'er and sith
were spake to thee and tha.
When flat cap and headscarf were worn
and hens sat on the'er eggs,
no wasted food for owt were borne
to pigs who reet grandly et them dregs.
When bike or leg or bus or tram
were allus good for us,
and meals were allus made by Mam
coz Pa had earned the crust.
Well, fashions come and fashions go
but those streets should've stayed,
the brick and stone...

Et Tu, Brute? Et Tu...
You too Brutus, you too, in this deed
to make your Caesar's mortal self to bleed,
see, his cloak, drawn across his eyes
better blackness seen as Caesar dies
than iron blades such friendship breeds...
Tonight a widow wears her weeds
think on this and on your fears feed
before long Caesar's ghost will cry
You too, Brutus!
Harken, Mercury's swift winged heels
come as guide to feed Charon's needs,
to boat Caesar down the Styx this night
from this unkindest cut, I breathe my last sigh,
for friends, your enemies will...
to make your Caesar's mortal self to bleed,
see, his cloak, drawn across his eyes
better blackness seen as Caesar dies
than iron blades such friendship breeds...

Macbeth a tragedy
I have ruminated my Holinshed
not idleheaded as in fairyland,
but stern employment and in fullhearted
hobnob with the past to put to my hand
a play, master Holinshed, obliged me.
And a right cruelhearted play at that,
to sharp out-herod's killing roguery
a Scott's King's murder an', all that, begat....
I shall out, out, pen's honey-tongued humour
to metamorphize to foul bloodyness,
to silence my groundling's jaded clangour
and turn rivals to...

Song of Joy
The organ blasts such great big wind-blown notes
out into the the Sabbath's morning air
bringing a lump to lazy laggards throats
disturbing our Sunday slumbers there.
I can hear a bass-baritone voice, voice
words of joy ''... help the weak and curb the strong...'
'tis such a huge thundering hopefilled noise
to a rapidly gathering throng.
Then all the bells of all the steeples ring
out in ringing appeals in this refrain,
''... build the road of peace before us...'' and sing
your songs of joy in peace, again.

Ho Ho Ho?
The original St Nicholas
Although this may sound ridiculous
Was born 280ad, 1743 years ago
A monk, or bishop from Turkey, ho ho ho
Thus proving that Santa
Was unstuffed in Turkey
Santas history
Is a little querky
Santas first reindeer, appeared in a poem in 1821
Two years later, it had risen to eight, just for fun
116 years later
Along pops Rudolph in 1939
Thus turning the ridiculous
Into the sublime
In Scandanavia
Santa still wears green
Symbolic of trees, and nature
And the changing seasons seen
Why we...

In his own words
Over one thousand words I have exposed
and fitted right champion to the tongue,
note, some I ungraved, some, unretired,
if asked ' Who's hot-blood, metamorphized these?'
Tell them, William Shakespeare, esquire
(make strong hints as to my Unknightedness!)
late of St Helen's parish, Bishopsgate,
London, now home again, in my birthplace
in our New Place, Stratford -upon-Avon.
Once I had youth's Friday nights eagerness
to belly forth to embrace employment

Shakespeare Soliloquizing at Home
To be or not to be in London town;
plagued by armed bandits in dog-turd strewn streets,
arse racked bloody on lame nag's rough ride down,
and greets by sicked, pox-pricked-bawd's beggars bleats?
Foul beer, stinking bacon and beds be damp
where Taverners are filthy cheating rogues,
the roiling smog brings ague and hand cramps,
chance of hen's teeth, not whole clay-pipes to smoke...
But friendings there, Burbage and...

Moon over Borneo
gather near o’ kinfolks mine
by the fire's glow let's hear the chant
sacred circle and holding hands
let spirit's call from ancient mind
guidance we seek from realms of yore
wise ancestors’ spirits of old
your wisdom we seek for knowledge be
may the veil of time gently shift
guide us enlighten us o' wise one
we summon powers of the divine
we chant our mantra from earth's deep
incantations to scour the heavens high
we call upon the spirits from high
visions be granted our wishes be
darkness banish our sights be...

Oppression hammer
Building foundation
From collapse
Judgment
The entering thief
Sneaking through
Ransacking life
Intent
Power influential
Since snakes
Deciding ways
Self
To the bottom
Laying ruin
Like surfacing uneven
Structure
When shaking
Up toppling
Reverberating spines
Possession
Terror falling
Enforcing shall
To take sides
Man
Authority mortal
Hungers still
For other walls

Moths of Pompeii
Volcanic dust
Secrets of yesterday
Melted passengers
In the air of Pompeii
Sweeping antenna beads
Scooping up ashes
Like holy hands
Fleeing sooty pallbearers
Nocturnal wanderlust
Swarming with care
Across Mount Vesuvius
In molten lava-light
Floating Roman embers
Seared patterns of eyes
Blinking in their wings
In sand and grey tones
Powder clinging lives
Survived
On the

it hurts even the warrior.

one of the most
iconic uniforms

straight black lines

in everyone
if he had done

it would be called

the perfect scent
after a short shower
guaranteed
to hit the spot
