A Persian Warrior
- A Persian Warrior -
In a time known to history, but forgotten by man,
The mighty Persian army brought low old Babylon.
Great was Babylon, that empire across the sand…
But the power of old Persia had that lost war won,
Leaving blood and desolation, both far and near.
I was there when the Ishtar Gate fell into splinters!
I was there when the proud kings knew utter fear.
My axe held high, the steel in the sun ever glitters,
But that light is soon covered in the blood of men,
And you keep being told to take a life yet again…

Khione
From movement and ice, you sprang
Propagated by the maelstrom
Whipping shards of jagged glass
Reflecting bleached landscapes back at you
Prints covered as soon as they are made on the trek from the summit
To the peak
As what waits there is guarded by unspeakable wrath
Cold and detached from the colors it protects
Bolstered by a families never ending push downwards
Off the peaks
Into the sea
You dive deep
Deeper than most have dared to go
Deep enough that the light is lost and the pressure forces a chill...

Parallel Lives - Journal Entry: February 26, 2024
Journal Entry: February 26, 2024
Today, as I looked deeper into the historical archives of the Dallas Library, I unearthed another piece of my great-grandmother's story. Her presence seemed to leap out at me with a vibrancy that belied the passage of time and I could almost hear her whisper, “Keep searching for me.”
The photograph that caught my eye was one of her at the age of seventeen, radiant and beaming with the confidence of youth. She was the winner of a swimsuit competition held in Dallas in the summer of 1950. Her beauty was undeniable, a timeless elegance...

My Great-Grandmother, the Queen of Frogtown
Sitting in the cozy corner of the downtown Dallas library I was drawn deeper into the mysterious life of my great-grandmother, Louise. At 28 weeks pregnant, with a growing life inside me, the urge to unravel the secrets of my family's past is strong.
Louise, the enigmatic figure whose existence is little more than whispers and faded photographs, holds a special place in my curiosity. Born in the early 1930s, she navigated the shifting landscape of Dallas in the late 1950s, a time when the city was bustling with industrialization. But it wasn't the factories or the skyscrapers that...

The Case of the Criminal Queen
a detective story
It was a busy day for Homer Featherstonhaugh and as he leapt from the red London bus, as much as a man of his girth ever leaps, he had a loud enough song in his heart to make the sparrows quit their warblings. He dove into Bidwell’s and ordered a pot of tea and a cooked breakfast. Folks thought it was eccentric of him to eat in a workman’s cafe surrounded by boiler suits and such, or a sign that he was trying too hard to seem like a man of the people, a sort of reverse parvenu. ‘Silly old Homer’ they’d say, ‘Off on his odysseys again. The fellows must think him a...

The Blankety Blank Song
I knew an engineer and before he died,
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump,
I knew an engineer and before he died,
told me a tale and opened my eyes wide
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump,
I knew an engineer and before he died,
he told me a tale and opened my eyes wide
and I've no reason to believe he lied.
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump,
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump.
He had a wife with a blank so wide,
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump,
He had a wife with a blank so wide,
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump, ...
Ah-rump, titty-rump, titty-rump,

Sunnyside 1864 pt-1
1864 Sunnyside
On the 16th of September, 1864, Sunnyside Plantation was alive with the sound of a rooster crowing as the sun began to cast its golden rays through the cedar trees that were adorned with Spanish moss. The gentle autumn breeze was a harmonious backdrop to the start of a new day.
Sallie Virginia was filled with joy as morning light began to dance in the window of her room. With barely a moment's thought, she hurried to get dressed in her favorite outfit, before scampering down the stairs in search of breakfast. There, in the hall, she encountered her...

Nag
a horror short
To a low-ceilinged building just outside the settlement, a couple were transported by the elders. ‘It won’t do a thing!’ the man insisted, ‘I’ll still want my freedom from her!’
‘And I’ll be glad to give it him!’ the woman countered. They both wore simple country dress and were shackled by the wrists. They headed a procession that included a small team of jailers, the village priest, a few monks, and assorted onlookers. Their children hadn’t deigned to bear witness.
They were locked in the rough-hewn shed, which had but one single bed, one...
