The Straight People Express
We’re boarding an exclusive automobile.
This transport doesn’t carry LGBT people.
If homosexuals are waiting on the road,
We’ll pass them and we won’t look back.
If we see any lesbians hitchhiking,
We won’t stop and give them a lift.
If stranded bisexuals flag down the vehicle,
We’ll just pretend not to see them.
If transgender people ask for a ride,
We won’t let them travel with us.
But if we meet heterosexuals along the wayside,
We’ll stop and say, “Welcome aboard.”

With Time, and Strength, and Love
It all began with self-loathing.
With cutting yourself in the bath
at fifteen
and leaving shit everywhere.
The poor hygiene
that marked you out as gross,
as sickening and wrong.
You couldn’t love yourself because
you weren’t iconic.
Of course you weren’t straight,
but you weren’t even queer,
not slim and sweet-smelling,
a dish to make the muses leer,
a calamite or slut,
since who would care to slut with you?
Malformed and useless, without art.
It’s taken you your youth to learn...

that meant
