Poems about Death
#death
The broad subject of death, including grief and memorial poems when losing a loved one. Also concepts around death in wider society, fear of dying and what happens after we die. These poems may be dark and full of sorrow.
.
dear death
Take me home, I beg of thee.
Take my hand, and set me free.
Dear death, please hear my plea
Release me from this misery.
Take my hand, and set me free.
Dear death, please hear my plea
Release me from this misery.

Fruit for a Season
The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes,
and the pride of life will pass away
and I, as one given to such desires,
will pass away as well and cease to exist.
The beauty that captured me in your eyes was like
sunlight glimmering on a floating bubble
that lasts only a moment.
When the liquid edges of our lives collide with death,
we cease to be.
We will not have a home in darkness.
We will not dwell in some spirit world.
We will not BE at all.
I bowed between the spreading wings
that gave...

After My Death
When my soul drifts away
to the hands of the holder,
and I am nothing
but a mere memory, lingering lightly.
The things I missed in life
will be too far to see,
and will no longer hold any worth
after my death.
My corpse will become a feast
for maggots to feed on,
and for regretful necrosol to swallow,
within a sorrowful grave steeped in remorse.

Saints Decay
In hallowed ground where whispers cease
Stands the saint, in rain’s soft grief
A figure draped in shadow's lease
Amidst the world’s withering leaf
With head bowed low, a crown of moss
His flesh a canvas pale and worn
Each droplet’s kiss, a silent gloss
Upon the scars of love—now torn
Around him lies the fading light
The flowers wilting, petals fall
Each heartbeat mourns the creeping night
As silence binds the earth in thrall
The heavens weep for days gone by
For souls entwined in sacred breath
Yet still...

Secrets - The Lost Friend
They say I muttered two words when I got back to the estate car park on the Bank Holiday Monday: Vince Macarthur.
I'd arrived without my most prized possession: my bike. You hadn't returned at all. And I'd lied, hadn't I? Told your mum we were going to the local park but sneaked off to Whaley Hill. Everyone was worried because they knew I wouldn't have left my bike on Whaley Hill or abandoned you.
They say your mum became hysterical, especially when she realised I'd lied. Neighbours drove to Whaley Hill, but friends prevented your mum from going. It's a good job they...

Can't Break Me Down
I was born right before a hurricane,
Grams said it was nonstop wind and rain,
But the storm didn’t break us down,
When I was older the civil war came,
Dodging bullets is not a game,
But I didn’t let that break me down.
I’ve seen shit no man should ever see,
I’ve felt the tracers fly past me,
All I could do was just hit the ground,
I was only but eight years old,
To survive I had to be bold,
Because death makes a loud sound.
But of all the scariest things I’ve seen,
(Some of you will know what I mean)

The Haunting
Death surrounds me
Taunting. Teasing.
Trying everything to get me to cave
His pulse slowed as he held my hand
Her pain ended quick. An instant really
She suffered. To know she suffered
I don’t want to be surrounded anymore
Please. Suffocate me.

After Death
(Verse 1)
The light extinguished, a final, hollow breath,
Cold steel embrace, the chilling kiss of death.
No silver lining, no pearly gates above,
Just endless blackness, devoid of any love.
They told you stories, of heaven's golden shore,
But lies are whispers, and truth will always roar.
(Pre-Chorus)
The body's rotting, beneath the frozen ground,
But something stirs, a horrifying sound.
A twisted echo, of every wicked deed,
A harvest sown, from every planted seed.
(Chorus -

Gentle Ending
the black birds shadow a soft dark cloth
comes down quietly where light goes off
a cold beauty when things are still
when hearts stop beating and life stands still
no breath to take no tears to cry
just quiet sleep where all things lie
the worlds a picture with colors gone
as feelings fade and the spirits drawn
to starlight whispers and space so wide
a calm smile on a face that died
the body may rot and bones grow old
but something stays a story told
in dark valleys where secrets hide
