travel to Porto
On the way to Porto for a week's holiday, we drove through a pine forest a man planted forest the way each
stood at a respectful distance from each other
A year later in high summer, the forest took fire and
when flames met on the road, cars were trapped and many people, and families, died in the horrific hell-fire.
Our hotel was situated at a height, we had asked for a downtown hotel, my wife said it was my fault since I had tried to speak Portuguese- not far from a disused water tower, it's gated surrounding full of rats where every night hideous screams were heard in...

Delayed Snarky Responses to Phrases from 90's Personal Ads
You must look equally good in jeans or a ball gown
because you attend many, many balls?
Height weight proportionate
might we expect the same of you?
Drug and disease free
got something against lepers on meth?
You'll find me outdoors
outdoors is pretty big. I might not
No one ever guesses over 35
the polite response to your awkward little game is to subtract ten years. duh
I don't date gals over 40
no "gal" of any age wants to date a man who calls women "gals'
I'm intelligant
you sure?
I have green eye's ...

Trolling the Stream
Trolling the stream, watch the yuppies go in circles.
Shallow rollers, biting the cast with the current, turning inward with the tide.
Exposed for catfish, bellies in the waves.
For bottom feeders, down the flow, over rocky terrain, unknown.
They also bite when it rains, or if there's assumed bait.
Skip a rock, watch the ripples, and they look to feed.
Hook, line, and sinker - caught.
Used for bigger fish in deep, still waters.

Damespotting
Her presence was smouldering,
and she had an intensity that attracted him like a magnet.
Before his mind was allowed to wander she sat down next to him,
her aroma pulling him in like a bluebottle into a pot of honey.
With words unsaid; their chemistry shaped the silence between them.
Electricity coursed through the haze and lead to an exchanging of names,
as those around them melted into the rabble
of an uncharacteristically busy weeknight in the west end.
It was a polite exchange with a palpable, if unreliable, subtext;...

Missing Your Lips
Nervous in the back of the van
You were cradled across my lap
I leaned to steal our first kiss
Oh how I miss your lips
Listening to records on the floor
I moved in closer wanting more
I decided I would take the risk
Oh how I loved that kiss
Front seat sitting in the dark
Making out slowly in the park
Every moment was such bliss
Oh how I miss your lips
In my bedroom late at night
Tongues tracing our mouths inside
So many moments to reminisce
Oh how I loved that kiss

Sleeping on Trampolines
soul searching like every night
I'm just trying to find the love of my life
reach into the broken place inside
the feeling of home so familiar and I
pray to gods that haven't answered
they intervene when I seek death, but
what's really happening to me?
how many times have I passed by the string?
Do you love me?
watching meteor showers
gazing up at the sky
through the branches of a canopy
if my life was as easy as it seems
we'd never have crossed one another
you hold me in your arms like a lover ...

silence ....the exquisite peace of our profound love.!
Years later...
even today there
was a silence,
we were sitting next to each other
but there was silence on our lips,
it was the twilight of
the evening but there was
silence wrapped in with
the setting saffron sun,
the pond was full of lotuses
but there was silence
in the flowing water,
the flowers were in bloom
but the bumblebee
was silent here,
the air was fragrant
but the trees were wrapped
in nut brown silence,
the clouds were...

when it is too late
When it is too late
When I was twelve I lived at a farm milking and looking after cows, but a war had ended and the impression it made stayed with me and nothing could change the imprint of my mind
I lived a good life herding sheep and milking cows and my best friend was a little horse called Dolly and she loved me, she never had a foal, and in her mind, I was
a good substitute mind, I spent hours brushing her and trimming her horse mane
Idyllic, wasn't it? Worth writing poetry about the bumble bees and hens finding worms in the dark soil
Despite this, I missed...

Loss of Faith
Loss of faith
It was Christmas Eve 1947
A knock on the door, I stopped breathing
Santa entered with a bag
slung across massive shoulders
I saw it was, Mrs Stream next door
She was an extraordinary woman
who managed to get fat in the war years
I thought the bastards had been
telling my lies all those years.
I bet the Jesus stuff is lies to
Get us children to behave and say thank you.
I lost my faith
but didn't tell anyone
I was given woolly socks and a fire engine
made of wood
It was easy to bribe back...

conversation
familiar face
translucent string
exonerate
softened touch
strangled throat
licorice bond
kaleidoscope
brushing fingers
soul exchange
licking lips
pouring rain
bleeding comfort
ancient wounds
magnetic pull
"I like your shoes."

neigbourhood
The neighborhood
At last, I found the bairro of my dreams
so quiet, for once I could hear the swallow sing
A grocery, a cafe and a pharmacy, what more does an old man need.
Tall trees protected by the North Westerly, here autumnal
leaves fall in peace.
Alas, I shall not live here, but go there on my bike
when I want to listen to stillness
