The Subway (free-verse poem)
I stand alone in the dark Fulton Street subway station,
Breathing in the urine-scented air,
Breathing out clouds of steam,
A subway train rushes along,
Not stopping,
Biting at my eardrums,
With the painful percussion,
Of thousands of people,
Silently screaming,
I don’t want to see,
I don’t want to see,
I don’t want to see,
The air fanned by each subway car,
Rushes against me,
Pushes the ozone and the smell of burnt brake linings,
Into my nostrils,
Along with the air,
Sucked through...

ah, but once ..
when in the city I suggest you look
up to you, of course,
but it looks pretty awful from the
ground down
as you are, wouldn’t it be better if for
once
I watched a cleaner in an office block
late at night
when I was outside the
hotel smoking a cigarette I like to
think she was beautiful
and then I looked down...

cathedral bells
I happened to be
walking past
the cathedral when
the bells gave
me pause
and take a deep breath
and think of god

very architecture

excuse me, sir, can I stop you
for a minute and talk about
god ?
no.
are you frightened of talking about

I’m in a hurry to get to the shops ..

The Hit Is Going Down
BANK OF AMERICA
Manhattan, New York
“Ma’am are you sure this man tried to rob you.”
Zaniyah looked up; she tried at best to read Marcus’ response behind his sunglasses.
Marcus slightly nodded his head.
“Yes he did.”
The head security officer lifted his walkie-talkie to his mouth and pressed in a button.
Marcus saw two men hurrying down the street.
“I think the lady needs to get inside the bank, and now?” Marcus barked.
Zaniyah ran to the door.

progress, my arse
architects had different ideas in different centuries on building
a city ends up a bit of a mess, be it Georgian, Victorian,
or nineteen sixties ‘progress’ has to live with the past, as well as your contemporary offices of glass ..

City
Constant Noise.
Constant beats.
Constant walking,
on city streets.
Never that dark.
lights light up the sky.
Never walk in the park.
Late at night.
Carts of food,
at every corner.
Venders drool,
for their next quarter.
One in the morning,
you still get some smiles.
One in the morning,
Don't trust those eyes.
Does a city truly sleep?
As busy as it seems.
Even rodents creep.
Hyped up on caffeine.
Would I survive at a slower pace?

evenings in the pub
the city never looks
fairer
than in dank and dreary
weather:
indeed nothing could be better
than a hostelry in winter,
warming yourself by the fire and with the prospect of
dinner
what care I for what summer
may deliver

One hot, muggy night
A boy walks alone
Shirtless on a hot, muggy night
He loses his virginity to a man underneath the Henry Hudson Bridge
He thought the guy was going to kill him
Instead he was raped
He can't tell anyone
It's a secret between you, me & him
Don't tell anybody, okay?
Don't fuck this kid over
He's been fucked over enough

One Good Surprise Deserves Another
Nyomi's parents
came to San
Francisco to
visit their daughter and
spotted her naked with
her roommate Jacob in
the bedroom of their own apartment.

I have simply sunken into a sinuous street,
Somewhere, swathed in an endless sleet,
Specked with soot, and
Lying stiffly, I gather scraps,
Remain still beneath the jittering lamps, and
Soundless amidst the fatalistic pounding
Of worn soles against the concrete
Across which sparrows scatter, and
Pick the flakes off of a pale mass.
Inside, you stir below an interminable sheet,
Perturbed by its immensity,
The snow, the settling,
The bag incessantly banging.
Smog hangs as heavily as my certainty,
Clinging to...
