Maybe we've got it round the wrong way?
Makes more sense to be sad and cry when a baby is born, that's when suffering begins.
Makes more sense to sing and dance when death arrives, that's when suffering ends.
Maybe.....it's just a thought.

External Wombs
Disconnected
From the mother
Independent
Yet dependent
Of her warmth
And protection
The day of birth arrives
The womb
Is opened from within
As the young face the sky
Whilst walking on eggshells
Mouths gaping open
Seemingly in astonishment
Awaiting their moments
For food
Then eventually take wing
And fly!

A Legacy
for my granddaughter Varley
I open my arms to receive you.
Cradling your tiny head,
I gently kiss the soft tufts of your hair.
A rush of sweetness envelops me.
Powder and lotion, long-buried memories
of holding such a delicate life in my hands.
Buried but not forgotten.
To hold you feels right;
to hold you feels like love and home
and Hope.
I marvel at your miniature fingers and toes,
how such a small thing
can make me want to live so much.
I burn silently with love and tenderness
for you.
You are...

corruption
Corruption
I like winter evenings in Portugal
lit wood fire
my wife prepares the evening meal
On my way home one evening
a police officer stopped me
something about my headlight
I thought of offering him a bribe
but had no idea how to go about it
Police officers are not well-paid
and Christmas was coming up
I'm not a regular Don Corleone
The officer looked disappointed
the traffic fine is sent by post
I told my wife about this episode
the hairdresser in the village
had told her the officer shaves ...

Vale Paradiso
Vale Paradiso
The sea life is blueness caused by monotony
Formica tables and dirty fingernails
as the ship wanders between water vales
climbing to the top of mountainous berg
and sharply falling into a foamy brew
when the storm persists, knowing a small
mishap is fatal, there is nothing one can
do, but hoping the end will be quick
In my ignorance, I look at the map that
shows the oceans, which appear to be endless
will the ship ever reach Los Angeles
I think of Vale Paradiso, this cumbersome
will not make it that...

Ultrasound
My daughter returns home,
bringing black and white pictures
of the new life growing inside her.
You are waiting to emerge
from her womb; it is only weeks now
before your birth. In the pictures,
I can see clearly the liquid outline
of your beautiful face
–you, strange little alien from
a place I've never known,
some faraway planet
of purity and perfection.
I can almost trace
with my unworthy finger
the soft, angry flare of your nostrils,
your tiny fist curled
and...

and as
i lay
taking
my last
breath,
of course
death came
to me,
and whispered
in my
ear all
the answers
to questions
about why
we
were here
and what
life was
supposed
to be
about.

legacy
go to sleep
little wonder
magic born
of my insides
in your dreams
I hope you wander
in fields of lilac
lullaby
make a wish
hold it so close
it clings to tears
when you cry
blessed be your life
my angel
I promise
I will never lie
silent stars fall
around your halo
you must have lost it
in the night
follow footsteps
from your window
dancing feet bare
beneath moonlight
hold me close
I won't let go
through brightest day
or blackest night ...

Hymn to the Mother
This one is for women.
Childless women.
The ones who have been
asked with that curious eye
“So why don’t you have kids?”
as you turn to say “actually
it’s got fuck all to do with you,
Sandra”
and it hasn’t.
Not a thing.
Because I think of my womb
as priceless—
so priceless, my child
could not afford to stay
and so
I cut out the shape of my Evey
as though she is a paper-doll
and motherhood is the scissors
I curl
her hair as if it is bright ...

Glass Box
the womb of the
woman who gave
birth to me was
brutally cut open
with a knife scary
hands wrapped
in plastic pulled
me out suddenly
& put me in a box
...made of glass
it's said it feels
like an invasion
creating a sense
of unsafety for the
...harmless baby
reading about it
it all made sense
the nightmares i
had as a child of
being put in a box
and thrown into the
water or left behind
in a burning forest

This brief glow.
The atom lives forever
or so I've heard said,
ten to the thirty-fifth power
it were in a book what I read.
Now, we are built from atoms
bound in our body mass,
on death, released, what happens
Why', they are put out to grass!
Or wrought to air, composed as such,
and from this mortal blow,
free forever, as I clutch,
to my brief glow.
