Most writers, journalists, musicians and fans agree that the post war youth of the 1960’s was politically aware and well educated. Plus, you can hardly ignore the proliferation of hallucinogenic and psychedelic drugs. There was also the influence of pioneering British & American bands and the boom in youth pop culture. For the first time in decades the German people had become a society that was independent and wealthy. All these factors and obviously many more were what lead to a music culture as unheard before.

The music of Germany, since WWII has been something of a rare phenomenon. From a vast nation obsessed with gaining a new image, making a mark for themselves and aiming to try and get away from the ghosts of the past. Such an attitude inevitably led to a youth culture that was inquisitive and yearning for new forms of expression. This uniquely Teutonic spirit had existed on a smaller scale, decades earlier with the new generation of classical composers and also musical innovators like Oskar Sala.

Silent Night, Evil Night- 1974
Silent night, stalker night, horror has come home
deck the halls with blood, murder underneath the mistletoe
a deranged and misogynist game, never see his face, no one knows his name
hidden deep in the attic dark, waxing feral, clinically insane
first was little Claire, he strangled her with care
she stares, with dead eyes thru her plastic shroud on the rocking chair
daddy came to town, but he'll never find her here
she might be dead, but still she rocks in decomposing Christmas cheer
cops couldn't find a clue, so they tapped the phone to hear...

When I started to heal
I didn’t realize how
Uncertain
It would feel
That the stages of
Self repair so clearly mapped out
By scholars
Felt like they hit
All at the same time
And as I began to
Search for myself
Unsure of myself
I’ve unsuppressed feelings
And they roar
And I want to scream
But I’m healing
And I need to keep level
