Biscuits
You needn’t care of what I seek,
My father taught me, he was wise:
“No matter how you look and speak,
Become the sun each day you rise.”
Do I annoy you by my spunk,
The way I handle every slight?
Why do you fill your head with junk?
As President? Well I just might.
My faith is day, my passion night,
But you don’t know me, you despise
How much I love, with whom I cite,
And wonder next time when I’ll rise.
You hate me for my looks & strength,
Of different hair & skin & nose.
You...

Until I Find You Waiting
Tell me all the places I can find
The dappled shadows of you
That show me everywhere the sun goes
Where your warmth is while I live.
I know there will be other moments
In dreams where I’m wide awake
And yet only exist in dreamscapes,
Because that is where we’ve lived.
The river’s yearn and pull to the gulf,
Our currents, when strength is spent,
All conjoined in a vortex of mirth
Felt so clearly from my mouth.
That will assure us without pledges,
Totems of your abundance,
Reading a deep night’s...

Like Maya Angelou (Tribute)
Sexy, sultry and deep like Maya Angelou.
The words that bloom from the cracks in
The sidewalk like flowers. A painted blue
Sky in the backdrop, wearing every sin
Like a diamond necklace. Pretty to wear,
But it also shows us where we have been.
You light up the night sky and every tear
Is well hidden within that smile of yours.
Some day you will rise and swear
To protect what people are afraid of. Doors
Will open and you will walk in with grace.
Do not let life have you down on all fours,
Cowering...

The Maya Angelou You Didn’t Know
Once an exotic dancer Maya was proud of her past at a time when any mention of sexuality left most aghast.
She was one of the first outspoken critics of our involvement in Southeast Asian conflict well before our troops were part of it.
Maya drank Cherry when while writing poetry and she loved baking, saying the scent of fresh baked cookies awakened her sensory sagacity.
She was religious without being a zealot, and she was feminist without being a militant.
A true poet, Maya Angelou couldn’t be labelled, because Maya Angelou was a true...

A Taste of Freedom and Thankfulness
A phenomenal woman, words
Echoed by my hero, Maya Angelou.
Fly home free like the birds.
You are every color, shade and hue
Of the rainbow. Never let the rest
Of the world keep you sad and blue.
Be continuously thankful and blessed
For everything you could ever possess.
Love, family and friends. Drive out west
Where you can taste freedom and say yes.
See every sunset and count all of the stars.
Remember every soft touch and caress.
Live life and sit on the handlebars
Instead of sitting in the passenger seat.
Nobody...

My Ode to Maya
More than the words she wrote
Dr. Maya Angelou gave me hope
You taught me to believe
That which is for me I would receive
Even though there were kids to tend
And clothes to mend
Rise up, you phenomenal woman she said
Don't you quiver and don't you dare bend
Stand up straight
Unlock the gate
You hold the key
Let them all see
Your beauty unfold
You've broken the mold
Of the Mother, the Sister,
The Woman, the listener,
The Daughter, the lover
Unparalleled to any other
Do not hide your face
Or your curvy shape
Your...

Maya Angelou
Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1928
Author, Poet, Activist, Artist and mother
My most respected
Black female poet
Penned some of my favourite poems
Caged bird
Phenomenal woman
Still I rise
Alone
As a child I read her book
I know why the caged bird sings
The book touched me
Was re-read many times
Maya Angelou
Is an inspiration
Achieved so much
And had an open heart
April 4 1928 – may 28 2014

Who am I . ( A celebration of Life )
Who am I ?
I am of the blood line of Maya Angelou.
A branch Among Branches
of a Phenomenal Woman .
A Leaf So Evergreen
of a Magnificent Woman .
A Stem Ever Rough Yet Smooth
of a Strong Woman .
A Root So Deep
of a Fear - Less Woman .
A Fruit soo Sweet
of a Juicy Woman .
A Flower soo Fragrant
of a Tender Woman .
A Tree soo Stead - fest
of a determined Woman .
Who am I ?
I am a Young Tree
Sprouting From a Tender ground
Umbrellad by the Massive Leaves
Nurtured by Nature ....
