small prayers
I rest a prayer on your heartbeat
like it's a breath of life
a breath of hope
and not just a reflection
of my own desperation
that keeps watching you
chase bad dreams
like there is a high
in there somewhere
if you just inhale hard enough
I place a prayer on my restless mind
and ask to dream of you
but the drugs that kill
the insomnia
bar the gateway to dreams
and instead I sleep like the dead
in empty nothingness
your face just elusive in the dark ...
like it's a breath of life

Sick
I miss you and it's making me sick
Yes, I realize the fact that I'm missing you at all
Means I'm simply fucked in the head
I keep asking myself what the fuck is so wrong with me
I plead with myself to get a goddamn grip already
How could I possibly miss someone who has done what you've done to me
Ache for someone who has brought me so low
I end up at the same excuse as always .. that I'm on drugs
Mind altering, game changing drugs
Heavy drugs
I also like to blame it on serotonin, dopamine and good old basic physics
I crave you...

tapping into the past
I'd never put much thought to it before
but it struck me this morning
all the verses I've written
stories I've shared...
with you as the shining star
when you left this earth it was the only recourse I had
the only means of keeping you here
...with me
a ghostly reality
I relive them with each stanza...you see
perhaps it's simply a gentle reminder
you were real...not imagined
alright, daddy...
now that I've figured it out...
I'll catch you again...later
...in the lines of another poem
Happy...

Unsung Heroes Part V: Felipe (dad)
You were born five years before the Spanish Civil War that would see your father exiled.
Language came later to you than your little brother Manuel. And you stuttered for a time.
Unlike those who speak incessantly with nothing to say, you were quiet and reserved.
Your mother mistook shyness for dimness, a tragic mistake that scarred you for life.
When your brother Manuel died at the age of three from meningitis, you heard your mom
Exclaim: “God took my bright boy and left me the dull one.” You were four or five.
You never forgot those words. How could you?...

Requiem for Mom (sonnet)
You were only seven when you went blind,
But could see again in less than two years,
Two years later you were seeking to find,
Full time work to help your mom ease her fears.
Eight brothers and sisters home, and dad dead,
From fascists' caresses in dark, dank cells,
You rolled up your sleeves without tears or dread,
Worked full time packing fish and working wells.
At sixteen you left for a foreign shore,
Worked hard, learned to read, saved all that you could,
To pay mom’s passage and two brothers more,
Keeping a promise as you...

Glowing star hidden in the dark
With galaxies grown between
Still your lost light
A love so bright,
Filters through to be seen
Hearts on fire
Projecting desire
Through the vast empty of space
Fold into my hollow
Arms wide, heart of sorrow
Fall into mutual embrace
Stay here in the middle
Hold me,
Safe
