Buddhist monk
In silent nights,
the Buddhist monk leans over
the ancient sutras,
between the yellowed pages,
he seeks answers
for the desires of his heart.
The moon, serene and silver,
lights up the temple
while he meditates
his thoughts wander
in search of understanding.
He recalls the words of the Buddha
that he taught about suffering
and detachment being like love,
regardless of its shape,
It can be a blessing or a trap.
The monk contemplates the duality of life:
desire and renunciation.
And how love, like a...

My Castle in the Aire

My Castle in the Aire
When I am in the mood to ponder
I’ve discovered
in the absence of everyday din
at dusk
at dawn
no highway traffic
no owls hooting
or javelinas playful grunts
no orange cardinal
calling out to mate
or howling coyotes
no computers on
or streaming news
for me,
zazen comes easily
naturally
also, it is a boon
when I can’t remember
what I had for supper
the day before

Light Years
The farthest back I can remember, there were already forms…forms, faces, locations. I remember seeing them and watching them like I was a viewer with no body of my own. It all felt familiar but mostly random. The people and the places didn’t seem to match and would often switch without reason. I remember feeling very strong connections to many of the images I saw, but I cannot refine a memory to a particular emotional reaction to a particular scenario.
I have no way to measure how long things went on like that, but, eventually, the forms and faces and...
