I was listening to Alan Watts speak on zen on YouTube. He helps illuminate the universal within the trivial.

I've been practicing Zen for some 35 years and it was the books of Alan Watts that first introduced me to Buddhism and Daoism all those years ago. My Zen teacher gave me koan to work on a long time ago... What can you do without any assistance? A truly beautiful koan that is always empty but always alive...the essence of shunyata.

I studied Asian Philosophies and Cultures in graduate school. I feel Alan Watts explains all of it excellently. I am glad you enjoyed this poem.
