Defaced

I'm a failure at being myself.
Fear forces me to feel what others feel.
I'm made to accept a world that puts me through hell.
Fear forces me to feel safer behind the faces that I steal.

Unsure of what others expect from me,
Yet so determined to fit in.
Unsure of what I want myself to be,
Yet so pressured to follow the heart within.

In despise I take off my mask of skin,
And look in the mirror to see what I really look like.
In distraught I see another mask, and so take it off again,
And tear ever more until there is no flesh for their wrath to strike.

After wearing so many masks, it's so very hard to tell,
That this face is mine and the others are not.
After ripping them all off, I've seen I'm just as well,
That I never had a face, and in the end I just forgot.

I know the wounds will never heal, I don't even need to ask,
And all this happened because I wore those stupid masks.
I found I was a failure at being myself,
And so I forced the world to put me through hell.
