They Have The Music In Them
Alder wood glossed lightly
seems to be in immaculate care
not like the collection of Willie's
not a road warrior
No pick for her for I wonder if she studies Buckingham
"mind she's strictly rhythm, doesn't want to make it cry or sing"
no open space for the lead guitarist is on fire
everyone is feeling their lives' pain
Shocked into silence by the vocal dexterity
resonating so close to the elegant six-string
the voice draws you but the fret work makes you stare
power and grace classic for any genre
In what seems like s blink the set is done
still sitting trying to comprehend what I just saw
comparing her to greats heard in the past
or just trying to figure out the riddle
Is it just "man" thing or my peculiar hang-up?
something about a mistress of an instrument on stage
not just a singer but even a greater delight
connection and subjection all in the art form
So mad love to Ella, Sarah, Billie
Sade, Barbara, Janis, and so many more
but poetry in motion is a chick playing
something besides vocal octaves in color
The ladies out there like Candy and Mindi
Susan, Shawn, Bonnie, Lita, Alicia, Enya, and the like
leave me spellbound in fluidity of playing
proof positive that creation was in the know

Way to go JAZZMANOR, this made me want to hunt down all of the artists you shouted out. Really loved the closing lines.

Hopefully despite not including the last names the hunt wasn't much of a challenge.

Clapping my hands so damned loud until it's deafening!!! A great homage to those ladies who "play" the music. Nothing sexier to me a sista' who plays slide guitar or some sexy saxophone or one who holds down the bottom on a 5 string bass or moreso a sista that not only can serenade us vocally in five octaves but puts her male counterparts to shame on the the Ivories. An excellent write and tribute to some of my favorite "Ladies of Music".

Thanks Archie---funny thing is it wasn't until now that I realized I failed to mention the first female instrumentalist who really blew me away, Shelia E.
I would love to hear Anoushka Shankar live especially with her father no longer around.

I tend to think she was before her time. Certainly Prince and Ringo Starr know how great she is.
