One Step Forward Two Steps Back?
Ever been a moment when what you thought you had done
didn't seem to make a difference
despite steps the steps we had come?
When you thought you were teaching
about tolerance and respect
several years
only ignorance a student reflects
An appreciation for diversity
a black teacher by chance
a move to another state
was the education just a romance
Bathed in southern tradition
rebel cause true and strong
yet all I am thinking is
how I did this fellow wrong
For he seems to think a Texas cowboy
could never be black
ignorance goes deep
so much education he still lacks
Maybe being forgiving should be my name
but upon endorsing those curse words
our Facebook relationship doesn't remain
"I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will"
Just tells me in the age of post-racial
Obama and all
still along way to go before that ism
is going to fall...

Jazz My Friend...I hated ALMOST and hesitated SLIGHTLY to hit the like button:( pure shame of the country...too many years too many crimes...stained nation...to fill up the page with my paltry words would not change those sad facts...I see it experience it almost daily at work...pathetic peoples spouting hate...HOW to be born so miserable and carry such bile...never enough healing before pain rips anew...
Strong read my fine fellow!!!

Had me worried for a minute, thinking I had written the worst poem ever! I wouldn't have thought that racism would be that prevalent at your job.
In reflection that truth comes back to me---legislation while needed can't do it all.

Yeah...IT SHOULDNT BE THERE...we are VERY pressured but STILL MANY freedoms not enjoyed by MOST work environments..."THEY" treat our voices with respect and it CAN be a very free thinking company...but "the man" STILL persists here and there amongst us...loose lipped bigots who smile the smile and curse at a turn---needless to say we kinda steer clear of one another unless its a "have to deal with each other" situation...with H.R (no not puff n stuff) it becomes "he said She said bull crap politics...this area is still VERY backwoods rednecks...only some were lucky enough to go to college...sigh...yeah can never do it all...the collective voice for some reason is STILL the hardest to hear at times---but a cricket BUG is loud as the mouth that spews such hate...makes me proud and glad theres good hearts like you working in places that TRULY impact a change to future society!!!

The nicest person I have ever met, outside of my dad always regretted that he "wasn't kinder". He always stated in several books that "hate takes so much energy". So there it is...

It is sad that you had to make a trip to hell but comforting to know that you made it back.
Thanks bro!

Thanks but the accolades need to go the people on the front lines. So many people dealing with real struggles for survival yet maintain more dignity those playing in the corridors of political power.
If I had to deal with abject poverty or employment discrimination on a level others have, I am not so sure I would be as forgiving to my fellow man.

Jazz ,
I totally agree man. If the powers that be would stop playing games and concern themselves with what's on their doorstep, things may progress?

Pretty much it is going to be individuals. The so called fourth estate (the press), no longer seems to be a check on institutional transgressions.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. The good thing about human steps is we can change the direction they go in.

thanks---I very much thought at the outset of being in the class I could reach everyone that walked into my class. Maybe I did but like a parent, there comes a time in which they are independent. Even if I was the greatest educator in the world that would have been far from a guarantee that those students, who still had to navigate high school, would turn out okay.
