Warmth from the Heart of Mankind
"Warmth from the Heart of Mankind"
(for the "HOW HOT WAS IT?" competition)
It was so hot I wore no sweat
Its drops evaporated into the clouds of thunder
So hot was it I felt a chill
When the howling winds and rain washed over skin
Cracked and dried from uncommon fire
Breathed down on Earth from skies too bright
For even clouds to shadow white skin seared brown
Rivers once fed life with greenery
Thirsting one moment then flooded and drowned the next
Homes lost neath raging waters
Then left low and dry neath Sun and mud moved by Nature's scorn
Followed closely by the fury of Hellfire
From the winds of drought that sucked dry the mold
Taking root in the foundation of human exhaust filling the sky

Did you mean skies and not shies? (typo)
I love the way you blend contrasting images in words...they become so powerful in meaning!

Yes, thanks for pointing that out EngrVV. My eyes are really bad and I would never have seen that. It took me a minute to see what it was you were pointing out there. I rely on my ability to remember how to type without looking at the keys or the screen, but it makes spellchecking just about impossible. And with the h and k being similar enough, it looks enough alike that I couldn't see it even when you wrote that. I would read alot more poetry if I could still see like I did before. I used to be one of the top critiquers on the site every month, but I have't been able to keep up even with the poets on my follow list. I'm surprised no one else pointed that out. Must be alot of us with bad eyesight out there... jj

I knew for the first time that it was just a typographical error on your part, JJ...I bet you others have seen it too, they're just, or maybe a little bit shy to point it out.
I couldn't agree with you more on people having a bad eyesight, coz' I have seen a lot of typo errors...but then maybe they were really mispelled.
Although some are correctly spelled, we just thought otherwise!

When I was a teacher's aide in English, I had to read read many papers by students from gardes 9-12 and got to a point where I could tell the difference between someone making a typo or thinking a word was spelled in a way other than the way it was supposed to be spelled. The most common errors were typos of keys next to other keys because most people these days are not taught how to type, but learn on their own out of necessesity.
It's funny in a way because when I was growing up, kids didn't learn how to type until they were in high school and typing class became a necessary evil. Most kids hated typing. I passed it but only had a B as a final grade.
But there are obvious trends, especially when you see the same kinds of errors over and over. With the internet and computers now the main way to communicate and write, it is very common to see these trends. When we wrote everything by hand for instance, you would never see someone write an a instead of an s. But it's one of the most common mistakes made when typing. I think the reason is that the finger used to type those letters is the most uncordinated fingers humans have. Unless you are left handed, you almost never use that finger for anything other than typiing. I often accidentally hit the CAPS key with that finger and then realize after a couple of sentences that I just wrote a bunch of stuff all in capital letters.
But very often the most common spelling errors are when someone uses the wrong word that sounds the same as another and people forget which one to use, like to, too, and two. But another very common error is when typing very quickly and getting the letter all out of order. I have a problem with remember. I often find myself getting hung up with the m and the b and type it remebmer. And it's easy to spot and understand how that can happen. But some people are just terrible spellers and make numerous mistakes. It becomes obvious very quickly when someone is really a bad speller as opposed to making keyboard errors. I don't mind when people point out mistakes on my part because I can look and see what I did and I know right away how it happened. I know my proof reading abilities are not what they used to be, so not seeing it doesn't suprise me.
The kinds of errors that annoy me are when people use than when they mean then and then when they mean than. But that's because they are not the same word and if you sound them out, don't sound alike. But people do that one all the time. I generally point out errors like that in a PM so as not to embarrass the person, especially if they have multiple errors in their writing. There is a difference between helping someone and making them feel less intelligent. I have seen some people who troll for mistakes and jump at the chance to make a big deal out of it. That happens in the forums all the time and I find it offensive. How hard can it be to send someone a PM and let them correct it without hurting their feelings.
Everyone makes mistakes, so it shouldn't be a big deal, but sometimes it gets blown way out of proportion when someone has another agenda besides helping.

Ah, the beauty of industrialization... and the destruction of mankind.
I like this poem, it makes one see what man has become ever since he hungered for more and more and more...
