The Meaning of Alcohol

Drinking alcohol - what a bore!
Hasn't it been done before?
Just the thought will make me yawn,
It is more dull than mowing lawn,
To watch grass grow would be more fun.
But alcohol is not just dumb,
It is the drink that is the link,
To illness, death and injury,
And many forms of misery.
Tobacco's bad but booze is worse,
There is on earth no greater curse.
So many travel in a hearse,
Too young to die, destroyed by booze,
Reported by the evening news.
To meet their early grave they go,
Like those I now describe below.
A young man died from alcohol,
He drank and drove and lost control.
And late that night he died alone,
Beside a road, not far from home.
At 6 am some stranger found,
His body lying on the ground.
He could have had some fun that day,
But drank all future days away.
He'd only just turned twenty-three,
Now all his dreams will never be.
Perhaps he thought that he could drive,
That night which he did not survive,
But how could he decide to do,
What's right when he was point one two?
There is no greater lie than booze,
Which takes away the power to choose.
And steals away the power to think,
It is a good-for-nothing drink.
Police knocked on his mother's door,
And said she had a son no more,
They left her crying on the floor.
She'd lost the only thing that mattered,
Her heart will be forever shattered.
That is the toll of alcohol.
And in the other car that night,
A doctor drove the other way,
He'd always been completely sober,
But now his life was cruelly over.
He paid the awful price of booze,
Destroyed by a drug he didn't use.
He was his parents' only son,
They'll never have another one.
He left behind three children too,
Without the loving Dad they knew.
They'll miss him greatly, I've no doubt.
That is what booze is all about.
If someone says, 'here, have a beer',
It just reminds me how severe,
The toll of alcohol can be,
I don't forget so easily,
But think of all the people killed,
By drivers filled with booze they've swilled,
And all the crime and all the woe,
It causes too, so I say 'No'.
I won't support an industry,
That causes so much misery,
If I should buy some alcohol,
I would contribute to the toll,
By funding advertising lies,
Devised to falsely glamorise,
The drink that takes so many lives.
Promoting such a rotten drink,
Must be the crime of crimes, I think.
That's why I choose to boycott booze,
It is a drug I never use.
If someone offers me some wine,
I will invariably decline.
No matter what the brand of booze,
I'll always rapidly refuse.
And if you want to do the same,
Just say no, and no again,
To make it plain you will refrain.
Some people say don't drink and drive -
I say don't drink, and stay alive.
Just turn your back on alcohol,
And be the one who's in control,
Who won't contribute to the toll.
