Last Look

There is something
very moving
about seeing a dead child
in front
of you

and thinking
that there might
have been something
you could have done

to prevent this,
especially when
it's the child
in the mirror.

Paper and string
plastic bags
and broken
glass:

a collection
of decisions
altogether
make a series

of mistakes,
but one wrong turn
can end
everything

Last note:

I've torn the letter up
that you wrote;
it reminded me
of insincerity

and the need to keep lying
about how you
wanted me
to help you

do something
you later
blamed
me for.

Staring into it,
I see where I went wrong.

Looking back,
I don't.

So, I don’t….
look back.
