upon leaving

Alone in her room we sat,
she opened my present,
she read my letter.

The day after she would be gone,
travel the world for a year,
perhaps not coming back.

She laughed,
she smiled at me,
a rose and a necklace as presents,
she knew what I wanted to say.

I loved her,
I knew that I would lose her
but I wanted to give one last try.

"Thank you, it's beautiful.
I'll always have it with me,
I'll always keep it dear."

Not one word about my
"I love you!"
She smiled so beautiful.

I left her house,
she accompanied me to my car.
It was raining.

In the darkness we walked,
next to each other,
close, but not hand in hand.

As we said our goodbyes
we hugged one last time,
I was happy and yet I was sad.

She asked me to write her,
she promised to write me
stay in contact with me, she said.

When she came back,
we didn't meet even once,
she left for another city far away.

I had the courage to tell,
not the courage to ask,
not the courage to chase after her.

One last regret is still in my heart,
she has left me and I'm standing still.

With my letter, my necklace, my rose and my heart,
she went away and never came back.
Now all these things belong to her.
