Staring at highway signs and railway lines
The road out of here has always been perilous
fraught with fears and loneliness
despite all the glistening delights
city life has to offer
There is safety in anonymity
it’s easy to be nothing
it’s easy to be worthless
and invisible
It is easy to be loveless
when love is intangible and dangerous
the heart more than an organ to pump blood
through the tar-lined veins
of a cigarette habit that can’t replace the craving
for that elusive emotion
Because love is not easy and it is not always happy
it is not a Hollywood dream or an animated Disney concoction
regardless of how they’ve spun it into our psyches
telling us we’re not whole unless we’re one
of two
The prison bars are built from my own imagination
that sees ghosts in shadows and monsters
draped over chairs in the dark
or creeping and whispering from beneath the bed
Flick the light switch
count to three
...
and jump
The road out of here has always been perilous
fraught with fears and loneliness
despite all the glistening delights
city life has to offer
Living in the dark is easy when you’re scared of the light
the mirror showing too many imperfections
when my features are illuminated
and I fear to face myself
with biased subjective truth
If only I could see me the way you see me
everything would be different…
see if you can spot the lie
The road out of here has always been perilous
but what is life if you never risk the journey out
to unknown delights and bright city lights?
I want to see if I can glow in the dark
