Even when i seemed to hate you,

I don't deserve you as a friend...

Well maybe this "stood-by man" gave her something too. Maybe he loved her in a way that healed her and made her whole even though because of certain difficulties he thought he hated her but underneath he knew that he had always loved her. Just saying something like this could have been the case. Certainly hope these two will get their act together somehow. :)
