Night Terrors

nightmares loom, ugly and deep
fear and panic disturb my sleep
in dreams you’re gone away from me
i drift then drown in the cold, dark sea
my waking scream’s lost to your sleeping ear
as i check to make sure that you are here
try to calm my pounding heart
knowing but hating that this is a part
of the undying love I feel for you
evidence this love is true
fear is a fire burning hot
i couldn’t stand it if you were not
here beside me in this bed
here within me in my head
here inside me in my heart
you are the whole not just a part
of my life, my soul, my very light
and in this place, this darkest night
my mind fills with black despair
and the terror that one day you won’t be there
