A church wedding

Sitting on a memorial bench
in the drizzle I watched a
Scottish wedding party file
out of a church

everyone seemed happy

the bills had been
paid in advance

I wondered where
the money would go
make its way to the
bank somehow

I thought about our common
law married status
and knew it was free
but uncommon

I thought if all the money
used for church weddings
was used to gain legal rights
for common law recognition

our children would be better off
