What Was Said

What the man said
was not as important
as the fact that he listened;
a generation can pass
and a word is not heard
nor a thought digested.

What amount of healing
is given in a day
where the feet are stopped,
the arms held low,
and the mouth is closed.

The young man looks
and the old man leans.

The freshness of a wind
in the trees is passed
for the silence
of having never remembered.

There, in the bellows,
blown by a fire in focus,
a thought is welcomed
and the whisper is finalized.

Here they have treasured
what will not be again
and has never been before,
healing, and the long rain.
