i love you

you kissed me.
"i love you" i said
"don't say that" he replied
"but it's true"
"i know"
"so why can't i say it?"
"it's bad"
i didn't get it.
"why"
"because after we have been dating awhile,
i will do something dumb,
you will get pissed off, and
everything will get screwed up"
"first of all, nothing will break us up, and
second, if something does,
we will still be friends,
i can promise you that much"
i kissed you.
we walk to class together both pondering the conversation.

after school we walk into the same hallway
that just hours before we had had that interesting conversation.
with nothing to say, we stand there.
"i gotta go" he said
that was the first day i didn't get a kiss.
i didn't get a hug. all i got was a wave.
not even a goodbye, just a wave.

when i got home, i got a text message.
"I LOVE YOU" it said.
i texted back "what if i said i didn't believe you?"
"i realized i was dumb. i should have kissed you and hugged you
until i couldn't anymore, then kissed and hugged you some more.
i love you to death, i really do."
"okay. i believe you, but i have to go. i love you."
"goodnight beautiful, I LOVE YOU"

those were the best words i had ever heard
i didn't even care about the goodnight beautiful part.
i was more interested in the three words everyone wants to hear:
