Empathy

 
What the world needs more of lately is empathy
Empathy for those who are struggling or have less
For those that are facing troubles and adversity
For those who have been ostracized and suppressed

Empathy for people with mental health struggles
Ranging from depression, anxiety and PTSD
Empathy for those with neurodivergent challenges
Varying from dyslexia, autism to ADHD

Empathy for those who are displaced and homeless
Understanding mental illness and addiction
Considering the effects of public policy in society
People who are suffering with many afflictions

Empathy for those who are elderly or are disabled
Those who don’t have resources or accommodations
Or those who work hard trying to make ends meet
Praying that this nation will give them salvation

Empathy for the migrant or refugee fleeing from war
Escaping persecution, injustice and extreme poverty
Empathy for those looking to make a better life
Because they have been met with bigotry and hostility

Empathy for those victims of abuse and trauma
Empathy for those in the LGBTQ+ community
Because they are people with real beating hearts
Who deserve to be treated with respect and dignity

Regardless of faith or nationality or preference
Compassion is coded into our DNA by design
If we strip away the debris of avarice and greed
Then empathy can lead humanity to be more kind
