Mabon (and tinned apples)
The website told me to
"Get out in the garden"
but it might have to be
someone else's garden
because I don't have one
(unless you count weeds)
but I'm pretty sure harvesting
the last of someone else's
summer crops is illegal
so I won't be doing that
this year
Though if Mabon comes around
and I happen to be in an apocalypse
the Gods and I might need to have words
because I'm not prepared
and I'm sure crop theft
is absolutely acceptable
under those circumstances
just not this year
In the spirit of the
unstolen autumn harvest
I made apple pie bread
with tinned apples
used a modified soda bread recipe
and measured nothing
It turned out amazingly good
and I might make it again
for my private Mabon celebration
which will basically involve me
making and eating apple something
and drinking spiced camomile tea
while contemplating my relationship
with nature and history
and realizing I don't really know
much about either
though I used to think
my ancestors were idiots
because they didn't have science
In hindsight they had something better
they had magic
and stories
and seasons and celebrations
to look forward to
whereas my life consists
of getting excited about payday
only to be disappointed
once all my 21st century bills are paid
So in lieu of being jaded and cynical
I'm going to try and reconnect
with a rich history
I've only just scratched the surface of
and if that means harvesting
apples from a tin
I'm gonna go with that
