Pueblo Wedding

Pueblo Wedding

Cruising the asphalt road to Cibola
Ancient Mission beckons
From the desert shore of a primordial sea
Now sear hills in a brown terrain of mountains
We follow the river of highway
Onto the parking lot
Of the church made from the mud of ages
Shaped by earthen hands of ancestors
Whose chants haunt the whispering wind

Upon parting the gates of the sanctuary
Low and behold a Wedding unfolding
We enter the sacred space
Where ancient art
of pueblo women gathering corn
is frescoed on adobe walls
Women are gowned and men tuxedoed
Except us,
In our faded blue-jeans and tie-dye shirts

The union born of love transpires
Like a dream for our unwedded bond
Until the covenant of bride and groom
Is sealed with a kiss

On the church steps leading to tomorrow
My ladylove blossoms into the angelic smile
Of belle whose utopian trance won my heart
Self-ordained maiden of honor
She steps into space of moon-eyed newlyweds
And lays her hand upon the groom’s arm
To bless their marriage
Wishes them a long and happy life together
Cheshire groom cat grins with gratitude
While shy-bride with Mona Lisa smile
Gazes in doe-eyed love

We set out on our own journey of life
To a home that calls from across the great plains
Into a future unknown
But hopeful as lips meeting
On the altar of life

Author's Note
My beloved and I were driving on the main highway through New Mexico on the way home. I noticed a mission church just off the highway. We were headed home but decided to check out the church. So we pulled off the highway and parked in the church parking lot. There were only a couple of cars there so I figured the church must be empty. But when I opened the door, low and behold, there was a Native American wedding going on. So being bold back then we entered the church and sat in the back pew for the wedding. Everyone was dressed in fancy clothes except us in our jeans and t-shirts. The church had been built in the early 1600s and on the inside wall were paintings of Pueblo women carrying corn. My beloved blessed the newlyweds after the ceremony.
