The Whispering Waterfall Part 1
A long time ago, when we were young children, my parents sold their rubber plantation as they wanted to tend paddy fields. They bought a piece of land with four acres of paddy fields.
The house that my parents built was at the side of a hill, with a beautiful water source. There were two waterfalls there with one that was so beautiful and cool that we frequented the place as children. We could stay all day there if our parents didn’t call us to come home.
I always felt that the waterfall was in a mystical forest, thevhauntingly beautiful waterfall was known as Whispering Falls. In my dialect its Monos-konos. Its cascading waters glistened under the sun, and its thunder echoed through the surrounding trees. Legends whispered that this enchanting waterfall held a tragic secret, a tale of forbidden love and lost souls.
It was said that in a village nearby, there lived two young lovers named Linah and Gabi.
My grandmother was good at storytelling and when she told us this story, we were mesmerised by her narration.
These two young people were very much in love but the norm of those days forbad such a union. Marriages were arranged by parents where the woman’s family would always look for the one, they thought could look after and support their daughter and their children in future.
Thus, looks and stature, intelligence and wit didn’t count as good marriage material. The width of your paddy fields and the sturdiness of your house mattered more.
It was practical and many a maiden must have done well with such a marriage.
However, Linah and Gabi’s love wasn’t the normal ones that acquiesce to common sense but rather the voices of their hearts.
No matter what their parents said or did, they were determined to have one another or not at all.
Apparently, Linah’s parents were wealthy and influential, so they adamantly refused to allow Linah to marry the love of her life , while Gabi’s parents were poor, tilling other people’s paddy field for their sustenance but proud. Despite the social divide, the love between Linah and Gabi burned brightly, and they swore to be together, even if it meant defying their parents and their cultural as well as traditional norm.
They usually stole away to be with each other when their parents were busy with their other siblings or in the paddy fields.
The lovers would go into the forest to take a walk away from prying eyes and that’s where they discovered the Whispering Falls.
In this beautiful sanctuary their love blossomed.
This went on for months apparently, where surrounded by towering trees they would meet and leave the world of social pressures and familial pressures.
Amidst the gentle caress of nature and the waterfalls, they found solace in each other's arms, or so my grandmother said.
They found strength when they were together but of course all good things or enjoyable episodes were just that, episodes.
On that day, Linah looked ethereally radiant as they ventured deeper into the sanctuary, the melodic symphony of the waterfall greeted them, its rhythmic cascades harmonising with the heartbeat of their love. The crystal-clear waters danced joyfully, reflecting the sunlight like a million shimmering diamonds, casting a magical spell over the couple.
But this beauty was the sign of the end of the beginning.
