The Darkest Corner

If God's out of town
living the highfalutin
while the world rolls crazy
growing tumbleweed from the Devil
under its skin
it's a sure bet there'll be hell to pay
when the party's over
and he gets in

He'll be madder than moonshine
spitting out stars
and stomping his feet
until the sky breaks a bunch of bum notes
pouring thunder and lightning
from busted harp strings
with fearful angels cowering out back
hugging the trash cans in cathedral yard
sniffing up all those bodies
left to rot underground

If you could
you'd dig a hole too
maybe climb right in
but there's no escaping the pull of Satan
maybe he's always been
the darkest part of your mind
forever itching
where you can never quite fetch
the scratch...

So don't be surprised
when a bitch gust out of nowhere
trips the latch on a hurricane doorway
where eternal damnation's
hot breath kisses
get blown from the bad guy
who was always sat some place
loving the down dark deeper
nestling between your ears
