Within My Sight
They say eyes are the
windows of the soul
and for me it's fitting
since I have two
I've shared its
luminous spark
twice with my sons
Shared my breath
until they were
strong enough
to do it on their own
months later
in the middle of the night
Where the fear
was so bright I
couldn't open my eyes
until the first sound
of blood and cut
umbilical cords
And since then
they are always
Within My Sight
My oldest
so like his mother
the constant dreamer
using my top eyelashes
as a hammock
Arms folded behind his
head, facing the clouds
talking to me about music
in the early dark hours
of the morning
My eyelids so heavy
but determined to stay awake
to encourage and lift
his spirits with every blink
Until the day comes
where he floats off
towards his dreams
My youngest darts
across my sight
as if playing monkey
bars with my eyelashes
Back and forth
over and over
was like that even
before he was born
never a still moment
inside my womb
Exactly like that in life
my physical child
prepared with strength
as I watch, steady
without blinking
In case he decides
to jump
out of my sight
ready to conquer
the reality of
this world
So unlike
his older brother
and yet similar
both inheriting a sliver
of my ageless soul
They say the eyes
are the window
into the soul
Each blink slowly
opens the glass pane
And as their mother
I bravely raise them
and learn to let go
windows of the soul
and for me it's fitting
since I have two
I've shared its
luminous spark
twice with my sons
Shared my breath
until they were

Author's Note
This is for my babies who are 24 and 18. LOL
They are growing up. I got introduced to my
youngest's girlfriend last night.
She made me some tiramisu and it was awesome!
I'm at a different stage of motherhood
right now and I'm adjusting the best I can.
I was at Walmart and saw the school supplies and got nostalgic:(
This is the first year I don't have to buy anything like that.
I used to love it!
Getting them ready and getting them superhero backpacks!
I'm kinda sad about it - all the changes.

My darling, this was gorgeous. The use of eyelashes, and the way each boy hung from them in a different way, the way you used your windows to the soul to encapsulate your mother's gaze. You are such a deep and beautiful human, and your boys sound like amazing human being.

Aww. thanks Betty:)
My boys inspired me to write. It's odd, looking back now.
I never had that need or passion for it. Afte the birth of my first son it was like an awakening. The creative side in me split open. Never did I ever dream of writing.
Then all of a sudden, I started jotting things
down and here I am. Writing and flourishing with
all you lovely people.
(And don't argue with me - you are lovely to me!) LOL
Thanks for stopping by Bombshell Betty!

Dear A,
The metaphors and images you write about in this piece are so delicately interwoven. I loved reading about the differences of each child and how alike they are in their love for you and each other. This is such a great piece for discussion on each phase of life and those passages into adulthood. Beautiful piece. H🌷

Hi H
My boys and I are at different stages. It's like a long winding stairway. A few steps taken here and there. Years go by and we're at different places but still together. It was great but exhausting at times. LOL
I just want them to be happy in life. I know life can be disappointing and difficult at times but to hang in there.
Life can be beautiful if you let it.
Thanks for the RL and stopping by:)

My daughter is 34 & watching her grow & follow her path has been a learning curve all its own. She's chosen not to have children but now her friends are having babies & for the first time I'm feeling that change of reality. Seeing their round bellies now after they played games in my home as children...it's a shock to the system I'd not encountered before. I love the eyelashes as sleepless nights

Hi Willow:)
You know I feel it was the most wonderful and terrifying time in my life, being pregnant. I was so sick all the time and my stomach kept getting bigger and bigger. I kinda panicked knowing eventually they would have to come out. LOL
But then the cool moments also came into play.
Feeling their feet when they needed to stretch in my stomach.
Or a swift little shift. It really cemented there was real life inside of my life. They are the truest form of blessings:)
Thanks for stopping by.
34!! That's a great age btw:)
Congratulations on all of those wonderful years together!!

Oh! the eve of that empty nest syndrome is like cold water to the face, isn't it? You would think that having learned to let go of my children, it would be old hat with my grandson, but it's not. The same realization coupled with the same questions rise.
I sense you are a gentle and caring mother and that you've done a fabulous job! Lovely poem!

Ooohh don't get me started with the grandkids!!!
I'm so excited for that. I'm not rushing because they are nowhere near ready for that but I'm so ready!!
I want to be the cool abuela that will take them to the
fun water parks and ice cream parlors!!
I am a softy with my boys most of the time
but sometimes I have to put them in their place.
You don't get to boss mom around. LOL
Thank you for your sweet words about my mothering:)
I did the best I could - still am.

Hi C,
That it does. Very fast! I'm still trying to catch up with my youngest having a girlfriend!!
Well, one that he introduces to me.
He's my secretive one. It's like pulling teeth to get him to
tell me anything about his love life. My older one was an open book. LOL

What a wonderful tribute, involving the three of you. They are great young men and that is props to you for being so strong and maternal with them. They are lucky lads having such a perfect mom(really). And you are so fortunate that your toils raising them has paid off so well.
When we were getting to know one another, I paid attention to details... You really do have the perfect heart.
Beautiful write, my love. Just like the woman who wrote it.

Re: Re. Within My Sight
Yes, I know they are maturing into adulthood. It's time.
I've got nothing but great aspirations where they are concerned. Both are driven and prepared. As best as they can.
I remember when my youngest was going through a tough time. He actually told me he was going to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. He was around 17 at the time and I remember thinking how grown up that statement was.
As parents we do the best we can.
I'm a perfect imperfect mother! LOL
But you my love, that is perfection! MWA
Thanks for the RL baby!

Hi Fai:)
I'm so happy to have warmed your heart. Really:)
It's the goal of writers.
To have our readers feel something.
Right now, they are on the way to the
movies to watch Alien: Romulus!!
I remember when it first came out with Sigourney Weaver!!
Thanks for stopping by and the RL!!
