SMALL

how small we were
in this big world,
two weeds
in god's plush green garden
and almost broke,
and that goddamned truck
dead in the driveway
needing a battery
needing brakes
needing a new transmission
and frank had that kia he'd sell cheap
another piece of crap
to work on
and how we owed the hospital
more'n we'd ever have
and duct taped everything broken
and perused the markdown for meat
and the goodwill for treasure
or just for clothes that fit
and how good that shit looked on you
and goddamn
i swear
they've gone up so much
you can buy it just as easy at walmart
but i loved all that,
you and me in our sweet minutes,
you in those shorts
and that big t-shirt
kicked back
barefoot
in the back yard
drinking a beer on pay day
before the bills got paid
and, jesus, may god rest
your angel soul
in the highest heaven there is
now and for evermore
amen
