The artist paints
As the poet writes
Layer upon layer
Word by word
Colour upon colour
Shape upon shape
The painting is built

Basking with blue
My soul did know
The flowers of the old
Where no one but you
And I do know
The stories that unfold
Behind colours of every hue

As the painter or poet struggles
To put rainbow colours
Descriptive phrases
Light versus dark
Primary versus complementary
Using a brush, palette knife or pen
Perspective is so important

The words they form
A tale so fine
Of love and life
And all divine
It is for this
That we do write
To give body to the sublime

Skies are not blue, earth is not brown
The many parts of the painting
Must be described with license
That both the poet and artist have
To present what we see
In novel ways
Not clicheed

So we dance with merry feet
On pages of life
Where we do paint
A lifetime of love
Like blossoms fine
And joyous laughter
In pinkish tinge

Look at the mountains, at the faces
Interpret these your own way
Your muse will guide you to choose
The right colours and images
You want to convey
Art and poetry evolved in parallel ways
From cave paintings and ballads sung

For both are messages
Through the air
Of passage gone
And yet to come
If you are there
With me in thoughts
We walk down parallel lane
Though hand in hand.
