For All I Know...
I've said hello
To those I pass
But none can do the same.
And though I know
We're a different class
To each I cannot blame.
Perhaps today
I'll run into
A father and his son.
Before I stray
I'll first imbue
"good morning," just for fun.
You see, although
Each quiet folk
Declined the greet I gave
For all I know
They've always spoke
In whispers, from their grave.
To those I pass
But none can do the same.
And though I know
We're a different class
To each I cannot blame.
Perhaps today
I'll run into
A father and his son.
Before I stray
I'll first imbue
"good morning," just for fun.
You see, although
Each quiet folk
Declined the greet I gave
For all I know
They've always spoke
In whispers, from their grave.

beautiful...can be taken in a few ways, I relate to that feeling of trying to reach out yet being unheard, unseen....

transcendental,
are we worth more as
sediment/
sustenance?
profoundly Whitman-ish

What an amazing write! The "good morning" just for fun gave me smiles :-)
Some say it's weird, but I love going to cemetaries, I find it soothing places.
And yes, I do believe the dead can speak - or whisper...

I love the flow and misdirection of this poem with the unexpected last stanza that completely changes one's perspective. Really effective write!

When I was a child we lived up the road from a cemetery & I used to love going & talking to the people there. This brought bad memories of those days. I used to make stories about their lives...I was a beautifully odd child. Much enjoyed this poem

Bad memories? Yikes. I'm guessing you meant back memories. :)
I'm glad you liked it Willow, I love cemeteries because they're quiet and mostly peaceful.
Thanks. :)

Tim, I love the light in a dark place. I’ve often found cemeteries to be peaceful as hell, and well maintained, which would make your walk pleasant. Enjoyable piece
