Blame it on Age
Choose your words wisely
I’ve heard more times
than can count
Yet, each one we choose
equals one less sound
we’ll ever make
We are wells
running out of ink
or quills
whose tip frays
There’s only so much
it can write
and so much less
we’ll ever speak
Choose your words wisely
For they may be your last
I’ve heard more times
than can count
Yet, each one we choose
equals one less sound
we’ll ever make
We are wells
running out of ink
or quills
whose tip frays
There’s only so much
it can write
and so much less
we’ll ever speak
Choose your words wisely
For they may be your last

A difficult but necessary truth to embrace.
Turning 60 has me running into a swarm of health issues, but at least I live in a blue state.

Yeah, yeah. . .rub it in. We have a democratic governor, I thought that made us blue; however, some maps I've seen still have us red.
Thank you for the RL honor. It's much appreciated.

Thank you, jigg82. It certainly can feel like we begin to fray once you hit 60!

Ah you're just a teenager! However, preventative measures pay off in the long run!

I love the edge in this. It’s cautionary, and shit… as many words as I spew I’ll be empty by midnight!
This was beautifully penned, and it’s an equally beautiful message: watch your mouth (thoughts, actions) because they matter.

Thank you, Betty! LOL @ "empty by midnight"! Methinks you were doubly-blessed, much like Indie, with a gift of words!
Thank you for the RL honor. I deeply appreciate it. xo

I've noticed my mom had become a lot more gracious as she has gotten older.
More forgiving and at peace with everything.
I'm sure age has a lot to do with it, but I also think she's tired.
She's still herself but more accepting of things.

Age does that to you, Adelphina. Especially at mine. We choose our battles more carefully because we've come to believe in the power of karma to rectify false situations for us. This is trust and acceptance—and in both lieth peace.
Thank you for your lovely comment and sharing about your mother. xo

I would rather age than the alternative, that's for sure. I at least want to see my grandson graduate high school and become settled in life before I pass. My one wish is to go before any my children or grandson.

Dear A,
I echo the sentiments of my esteemed poets above. This lovely poem is so reflective and has me thinking about what will spew forth without filter and fear of consequence. Words and actions seem to be on par for me and your write will have a long lasting hold because I don’t want my last words (or actions) to be something I regret. Great piece. H🌷

There's no time stamp on our lives...they go when they go. Mindful speech is always best practice

I agree, Willow. I have had you on my heart of late. I do hope you are discovering resolve amidst the pain of losing someone you loved. And that happy memories permeate and dispel the emptiness of loss.

I do think deeply about my content of what I write. But, my comments are a free for all.
And you don't fret over a limit. You have a long journey of words yet to travel.

Hahahaha! So true! 60 is the new 40! We've got decades!
Thanks, Styxian!
Curious about your name - is it a reference to the band Styx?

Scary message, but true.
I really like: "We are wells
running out of ink
or quills
whose tip frays". Good strong imagery

Very wise words indeed. I relate this to speaking as well as to writing. It's important when we speak to choose our words wisely for sure. With writing sometimes I think I'm done, what more is there to say yet something eventually always comes to mind. :)

I completely concur, Michael. There are times words seem superfluous at times, yet reveal themselves in time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, they are appreciated.
