Pathetic

It stalks sluggishly behind me,
I see its figure shuffling awkwardly between the trees.
It’s steps almost apprehensively toward me,
I’m unsure if it knows I see it.

I turn to face it and it freezes,
As if it’s trying to disappear into the trees behind it.
Its silent,
But I can see its chest heaving in breath.

It’s a pathetic creature,
Nervous, sad eyes brimming with tears stare back at me.
Its face is covered in dirt and blood,
And its hands are trembling as they grasp onto its own skin.

I reach a hand out to it,
And it flinches harshly,
Letting out a soft whimper.

It’s okay..

I whisper to it,
I don’t even know why,
And its eyes just stare back.

We’re trapped in a moment of silence,
Neither one of us moving.
I wonder how much it’s hurt,
To get like this.

I can see,
Just beneath the layers of black skin,
Tucked behind the tattered clothing it drapes over its protruding ribs,
Its feverishly beating heart.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for it,

Even when I slash its throat.
