I love twelfth night, although I think
the treatment of malvolio is appalling
I love a midsummer nights dream although I think the depiction of the mechanicals is demeaning
I love shakeare, but not all of him

Those are great plays and characters, but yeah, there are valid reasons why only about a third of the Shakespeare canon gets regularly performed.

I don’t mention his darker works, these are romantic and amusing, but there is cruelty in them.

Yep. Those "comedies" weren't always stoked full of knee slapper moments.

I've often wondered about the cruelty he depicts, if there wasn't something inside of him that clawed to be released - if only in a play or verse.
