The Lonesome L.A. Cowboy

(or the Last DJ)

I remember those late nights writing
While freeform rock played on the radio
I remember hearing the DJ’s voice
Now those nights seem like they were so long ago
Whenever I heard Jim’s voice over the airwaves
Or when a “Lord have mercy” came right before a song
The music felt that much better
Even if it had been a rough day

It wasn’t just his knowledge of rock and roll
Or the stories or interviews with many rock stars
But it was the smoothness and wisdom in his voice
That made “the tribe” feel that much more closer

One day as I was shopping at a Guitar Center
There he was, DJing on location
In a black leather jacket and sunglasses
Looking cool
The Lonesome L.A. Cowboy
I managed a smile and a hello

I heard he was suddenly gone
Those of us who listened are sad
He embodied a spirit of love and peace
Over the airwaves
With nostalgia and freedom
Saying and playing what he wanted to say and play

There goes part of my youth
There goes the Last DJ
