Such a good little snapshot portrait of a life. You cram so much in. The interwar years are fascinating to me because I wonder how people must have felt about current events and whether they in any way predicted what was just on the horizon.

Am currently reading Vera Brittain's "Testament of Youth" about the lost generation of the First World War. It was very popular when first published but as 1939 approached it 'fell out of favour' because it advocated pacifism.
(Also learned she was the mother of Labour politician Shirley Williams, which was news to me)

think testament of youth is one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve ever read. read it back in the late 70’s, and it’s stayed with me ever since

Apart from learning 'Dulce et Decorum Est' in school, it was reading my father's copy of 'All Quiet on the Western Front' that has stayed with me over the decades.
