the spoken word

"Words have to be used wisely; nothing can heal
and hurt like words spoken."―Isaac A. Yowetu

i cut―i mend, i bite―i heal:
     i am the spoken word!
i strike the moment with the steel
               of swift and solid sword.
                    my metaphors are mammoth stout,
                         my similes pin-shrewd.
                              my onomatopoeic clout,
                                   to stubborn ears, are rude,
clip-clopping like a horse in spate,
                              swish-swooshing like the wind,
                         hinge-creaking like an open gate
whose chain no one can find.
i am muse of the present tense,
          the music of the hour,
the wit and wisdom and good sense
of eloquence and pow'r.
