Old Friend

Hello old friend it’s been a while since we danced,
Since you played the pied piper and I followed entranced,
It’s been a while since you pulsed your dark beat in my veins,
Since you whispered instructions,
Since you pulled on the reins.

Your seduction, I’ll admit, it’s hard to decline,
You were electricity in my soul, you were fire in my mind.
But I remember the hurt, the pain and the loss,
Your friendship burns, I’m still paying the cost.

And that’s not to say that we didn’t get along,
Truth be told, part of me died when I knew you were gone,
And though our dance was a thing to behold,
We were Icarus, too high, We were Loki, too bold.

We waltzed in step, we piroutted in time,
The drunken fool with his god of wine,
So goodbye old friend, I must bid you adieu,
to invite you back now would be to kill me too.

Author's Note
The lure of alcohol never abates for me....    I met this old friend for the first time in years, last month. We got on like a house on fire, like we never parted. It ended in kissing concrete. We are once again estranged.
