At Mistwood Gardens
or Birchstream Meadows
Or The Club at Hunter Ridge (which sits between a gas station and a KFC)
all the apartments are luxury
all the pools are sparkling
and the fabulous amenities
like an on site laundry room
provide the lifestyle you deserve!
Come home to Random Name Farms
located just a short gunshot away from gang territory
where the pools - when they are not closed -
are packed with peeing kids
and the drunk adults
blast amelodic profanity- laced music
until close to midnight
At The Residences of Red Hawk Manor
or Crackwhore Gardens
or Generic American Apartment Complex
whatever the name
friends (three white and one black)
don't laugh over drinks in the clubhouse
next door neighbors don't know each other's names
and the Jacuzzi
when it works
has ice cold water
Even with advanced degrees
and professional jobs
housing for those who are single
is an increasing challenge
explore all options
there is life beyond

I'm moving to a nice, urban midrise next month, with truly cool amenities like a library with floor to ceiling books, and hammocks in the courtyard. My search inspired this poem.

I heartily agree. I know singles are far from the only ones affected. Americans may need to rethink their obsession with personal space; at least a little. One downtown high rise I looked at has very small apartments with an emphasis on communal areas. Kind of a cool idea, but the $1600 a month 320 sf studio's oven practically opened onto the bed. Still, I think the idea, among others, has potential.

Your poem makes perfectly clear the dystopian nature of American apartment block banality, especially the perversity of the place name irony so well skewered via "Crackwhore Gardens".
The topic is critical, of course, since everyone needs to live somewhere nice, which qualifies housing as a public ecological infrastructure issue the same as clean water and air, and rightly begs the question...how did we ever think it was good to privately monetize such a thing?
Additionally, we need to get more input from sailors and RV people regarding the more efficient use of personal space.

Sounds like a truly comfortable living space. The housing crisis is an ongoing shame for America. I am fortunate to live in HUD housing in the perfect location on bus lines and near places I want to go. However, many especially minorities end up in dangerous and dilapidated housing. I am so happy for you that you found a good place, my friend.

Thanks, John. I wish more housing aligned well with transporation like yours does. I'm now a few blocks from light rail. I can't get to work that way unfortunately, but I'm going to try it for other places.
